search counts mean nothing these days

what matters if you can rank on page one, which keyword planner cannot tell you

if your content is created around many related keywords and you know your competition is not too steep you may have a chance on getting page one of Google

sometimes if your competition research is done right it takes little effort to get page one results

you can only tell your competition by looking at page one SERPs to make that determination, so start there

you can either do this with tools or manually review page one results

good luck

but Keyword Planner stay away from it because everyone else uses it, if you want to have different results

The numbers on Keyword Planner aren't exact, they were never supposed to be exact. They're estimates based on a 12 month average.

You could have the majority of that traffic volume in a single month (ex: seasonal keyword). Example, very few people search for the keyword halloween costume in April compared to searching for the same keyword in October.

It also depends on what you're selling. If you're selling houses & have a 10% conversion rate then 10 traffic per keyword is more than enough traffic per month (ex: 1 sale per month per ranked keyword).

Your friend is probably ranked for many long tail keywords as well. It is also possible your friend has other traffic sources or is in a niche that is very high payout. There are many metrics to consider and can't rely on a single keyword being all his income.

Most of people using Google keyword planner for keyword research and analysis, instead of using only google keyword planner use some alternative, simple methods like use LSI keywords as main targeted keywords, take keywords from quora, reddit because these keywords are suggested by users only..use long tail keywords for effective ROI.

2.Wealthy Affiliate's keyword tool.

Both of them tend to be quite accurate and useful.
