You can put it wherever you want.

The reason it's suggested to put it before the end of the closing body tag is in the case the page doesn't completely load, that will cause less BS data.

Wherever you put it, just make sure the placement is consistent for that site or the data might look strange.

Google analytics code is generally used on site header or footer part. You can put it wherever you want.
