What is the value on a 15 year old domain with no backlinks?

I am looking to buy a domain to do some marketing for a friends business. He wants me to rank high and drive traffic to his business. The niche looks competitive in the serps. Five of the top ten results have a domain age of 8 years or more. Would it be smart to get a domain that has age to help me rank higher? How much would you value a domain this old? It has never had a website on it.

Age is really not a ranking factor.

What are the factors now? I have not been following the SEO landscape the last few years.

The same thing they always were.

Relevance, content, and links are still at least 80% of the score. Probably more like 90. I can find exceptions to any rule. So if you think you need HTTPS, you do not, if you think you need social shares, I can show you sites that are ranking and have none. If the content is targeting a low competition keyword, you can get to #1 with just extremely high quality content. I would not suggest avoiding links as a valid strategy, but some people just do pure on-page and it works for some keywords (surprisingly well actually.) But understand an enormous amount of time will have to be spent developing the content and it will need to be very complete as far as the topic goes. So, a 500 word page is not going to cut it here. So if you feel you need to write a small 5,000 word book, include 5 you tube videos, and 25 pictures, to be "the most valuable piece of content by a great margin" for that SERP, it might work depending on the competition. People might actually build links to it, if it's really mind blowing.

Probably not a lot. Without existing backlinks, it isn't likely to do much more for you than a fresh domain name.

Show me a 15 year old domain with no followed backlinks and I'll show you a domain that will never rank a page on the SERPs for any decent traffic keyword.

Don't confuse domain age with established followed backlinks. The domain itself is useless as far as SEO.

It's the URL + followed backlinks that's important for SEO and by URL I mean any URL, not just a home page or even a webpage considering any file type can rank on Google SERPs as long as Google can index the file type.
