Rival URL is too close for comfort.

Hi everyone,

I have a question that probably isn't terribly uncommon. I am using different names to protect the innocent

Let's say... a law firm (run by 2 sisters) owns a website with a domain of "cranstonlawgroup.com." Well, the 2 sisters aren't getting along and are splitting up the firm. One of the sisters purchased the domain "cranston.law" in an effort to confuse and steal business when the division occurs.

As the de-facto marketing manager, I want to protect and safeguard the cranstonlawgroup.com domain from SEO confusion, as they will still continue to share an office floor (same address), etc. etc.

I think that because our URL has a longer history, is listed on social media sites, and directories, has regular content updated that it will be difficult for them to play catch up... unless they hire a true SEO expert.

Am I missing anything here? Should I try a different strategy? What should I do to prevent potential clients from thinking cranston.law is us. Thanks in advance.
