A lot has been written on how to find and use dropped/expired domains. Once it was an easy way to quickly improve a website ranking, grabbing and expired domain as it saved time and effort. However, it has changed quite a bit since then and nowadays this process is not as easy and safe.
Moreover, even if this method works, it takes quite some time for the site to begin moving upwards.

This article is intended to help you find expired domains with traffic and high page rank value.

Why do it?
First and foremost, let us understand the reasons we might need it and what possible outcome we should expect.

Let us consider this domain:
  • - a domain with certain age
  • - based on a particular theme
  • - with minimum or no back links
  • - with content
  • - with little or no promotion
  • - link profile without spam
  • - has little but organic traffic
  • - has no filters

Now, do you think this website has higher chance to gain a result than the one being promoted from scratch? The answer is obvious. Building a website on an expired domain name will save you years to accumulate reputation, age, back links and page rank. In the nutshell, it is faster and more feasible.

Enough of that, let's get down to business. So, how and where can expired domains be found?

1. Flippa

Flippa is one of a myriad of sites that sell domains, sites and applications. However, it has a great advantage over the other resources. Indeed, if you are searching for an inexpensive expired domain with age, you are likely to find one.
  1. Go to https://flippa.com/websites
  2. Click on Established Sites
  3. Use filters to find required domains
Suggested parameters:
  • - maximum site cost $500
  • - sites with verified traffic
  • - revenue is not essential at this point, as long as there is search traffic
  • - minimum age should be 1-2 years or more
  • - monetization methods may be skipped at this stage
  • - type in a keyword

2. What criteria must be brought to attention?
  • - age
  • - theme
  • - organic traffic (must be № 1 in the table)
  • - traffic potential and keywords visibility
  • - time when the traffic started
  • - check for filters
  • - appropriate cost is $250-500
  • - spam, check for back links

3. Other resources

In fact, there are no other sites where you can purchase a good domain with little cost. There are certainly other sites which sell expired domains, but they will cost a bundle and will not necessarily live up to your expectations.
Another site which you may consider taking a look at is auctions godaddy.

In conclusion, this is a conceivable and accurate strategy, especially for a website with a highly competitive theme, as you will have good websites which will generate additional traffic for your goods and services.

Using the strategy above, you will certainly save time, which is essential for SEO. Everyone wants to achieve quick results, so buying an expired domain is surely a good way to increase traffic for your website and save a great amount of time.

4. Analyze the results and if necessary go back and change filter settings to find other options.

When you analyze the options, it is of utmost importance to look at the search traffic.

Supposing you found a domain with the help of filers, but it does not have any data on traffic.
First thing you should do is check ahrefs/semrush for organic traffic. In case, there is little traffic, check for keyword potential.

Use various filters to find the domain you need and when you find something worthy, try to buy it right away.

Ummm.... the title of your article is "How to find expired domains with traffic", and the first place you suggest is Flippa?

You know that those are not expired domains, right? They are live domains that someone owns and is selling.

Either the title was a typo or you really do not understand what you are writing about.

I didn't ask if you use it. I'm saying that the domains on Flippa are not "expired domains". If they were expired, nobody would have the rights to them in order to auction them off.

I guess in this article "expired" means "no longer used and available for purchase" instead of "expired and is available for anybody to claim it for free"....
          Hope it makes sense.
Overall author touched on very important issue - advantages of already established foundation and building on it instead of starting from ground up. I think many people will find it interesting.

Perhaps. If so, then the article title should be changed because I know a lot of people do search for information about "expired" domains. It would make it a little more accurate and helpful to anyone searching for that topic or this topic.

it is sort of naive to expect to find a good domain completely abandoned.... someone must have invested time and money in it before....

Not naive at all. Happens every day just like business go out of business every day (when they do their business sites go with it)

Going to have to agree with MikeF on this - Flippa is not the place to go for expired or expiring domains. In general they are a different market.
