I keep seeing posts talking about how it's not possible, or how it only works with super easy keywords.

All I can say is... focus on your on-site optimization more than your off-site optimization when you want to rank for a keyword.

A good guide to follow is to think of how WordPress structures it's dashboard for posting.
  1. Page Title
  2. Permalink (and structure)
  3. Content
  4. All in One SEO Pack
  5. Featured Image

If you put your focus in this very basic and general order you'll do a lot better.

Page Title

For example, when you name the homepage, don't just put the name of the business.

Instead, put keywords into the title.
  • XYZ Company: Landscaping Service
  • ABC Company: Computer Manufacturer
  • QRS Company: Diesel Truck Repair

Whether it's your homepage or an interior page, the URL does have an impact and is still provable. I've built websites with no keyword content, but simply a keyword in the URL or permalink to test this and it definitely has an impact.

Keep it simple though...
  • xyzcompany.com/landscaping-service/
  • abccompany.net/computer-manufacturer/
  • qrscompanyvacaville.com/

Content

Structure among anything is the most important thing here. When creating a page, make sure you build the website in mind for the visitor. To do this, keep the pages heirarchy in mind. Obviously you want to include your
  • H1 - XYZ Company
  • H2 - Yard Maintenance
  • H3 - Yard Maintenance Prices
  • H2 - Leaf Removal
  • H3 - Removing Leaves to Improve Your Yard

All in One SEO Pack

The only thing I use here, is the same title as the title of my page and a short description that is mainly focused on converting searches into clickers. I try to aim for clean titles (above 45 char, under 60 char) and descriptions (above 130 char, under 150 char).

Featured Image

I included this in here simply because a featured image can sometimes appear in social sites when shared. Personally I don't touch it but wanted to mention it because it's in the wordpress page creation page.

Obviously there are way more things at hand.

I suggest using Moz's ranking factors over at https://moz.com/search-ranking-factors

The above strategies however are some of the super basics of what I focus on and when given my attention they're the biggest reason I rank on page 1 so quickly.

Nearly every websites I've built throughout the years for local businesses and sometimes even competitive keywords have ranked within a matter of minutes because of these key principles. They're solid, legitimate and make it so I almost never focus on building backlinks.

Psst... last tip.

I always submit my website to statistic directories and ping it using a tool over at IMTalk.org - IMT Website Submitter other than submitting my site to google directly, this is one of the only techniques I use to build backlinks.. and it works.

I wish you luck, I know there will be people that call me out and say it's not possible or will say I'm not sharing everything.. of course I'm not, there's too much to share. But putting my focus on this order has made my life so much easier and helped me rank on page 1 of Google time and time again within a matter of minutes (if google indexes them that quickly) after submitting my sites to the search engines.

I do everything you listed here. During the last 30 days, I only got 7 visits coming from search engines. I spent time optimizing my content from Title, Keywords, long tail keywords, headings.... Should I get frustrated, or is this normal and I should keep doing whatever I am doing?

I prefer Yoast instead if all-in-one-seo....does the job really well. Also, are you targeting long tail keywords or what?

I'm with you on that one, Yoast is much nicer to use than all in one SEO. In fact i can't stand all in one seo, i find it not as user friendly as Yoast. Yoast has the prompts and color dots and the check list its UI is nice and as you do something it gives you a score right there. It's the better option for SEO plugins for WordPress as far as I'm concerned, but that's just me.

Is it really needed to have SEO plugin? How about without any using one, does it'll still work?
        {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[10746665].message }}
        • Profile picture of the author DABK
No, not needed. It just reminds you you didn't use keywords and where. If you know where they should go and bother to check that you used them when you're done, you've done the job of the plugin.

    Stop the B.S Justin.

You can't just rank in page 1 in 5 minutes in 2016.

You can't even rank in months without quality links and proper marketing.

Justin, I do that with every site I launch, every page or post I create, for the same kind of keywords. Have done it dozens of times this year. Not once did I rank on page 1 with a new site in 5 minutes. Heck, not even within a few days. Heck, not ever, unless I build a few backlinks.

So, since I do exactly what you say you did and I'm going for the same kind of keywords, what giveth?

If you're ranking on page 1, especially in the #1 position and having this issue, you're targeting the wrong keywords or you may be mistaken by your rankings. I suggest using Incognito window in Google Chrome whenever searching for your keyword.

I'm typically targeting fairly competitive local and national keywords.

An example would be "landscaping sacramento" or "pipe repair miami".

I can see why people use Yoast, I just had bad experiences with them in terms of ranking quickly.

I definitely like those features, I still prefer All in One SEO because it doesn't have much you can alter and I only change the title, description and sometimes the /%blog-title%/ to something like - Landscaping Sacramento.

I love one sided arguments that say "You can't". You can definitely do it and I do it on a regular basis. Instead of criticizing and adding absolutely no value to a conversation, instead consider asking questions or trying to figure out how it was possible.

Dabk, you're a good example of someone questioning, which I appreciate.

I'm not entirely sure if it's a specific way that I build, optimize or because of a specific theme I use, but here are the primary themes and plugins I use.

      Worker Theme (it's on themeforest.net)
      All in One SEO Pack
Google XML Sitemaps (only activate and submit once the site is done + add it to your footer with a link to Sitemap at yoursitehere.com/sitemap.xml)
Auto Terms of Service and Privacy Policy

There are likely other factors at play that I'm not mentioning here but these are the main things I focus on.

Above anything, I do my research prior to jumping into a niche, but I only dive but so deep. If the top ranking sites aren't mass companies (excluding directories) I'm all for it.

So in other words believe what a forum poster says because he wrote it on the internets. That makes sense (not really)

I'll believe you Justin. Just show us a competitive term you rank for without links. Shouldn't be too hard I hear it takes like 5 minutes.

There are likely other factors at play that I'm not mentioning here but these are the main things I focus on.
Now how is that adding to the conversation? Make a claim, show no competitive examples (even though it would only take five minutes) and then claim a secret sauce (which doesn't exist for a competitive serp)?

I'm all for constructive conversation but what exactly is being discussed really? somewhere else we might get the secret sauce? wink wink.

I did like the part where "Auto Terms of Service and Privacy Policy" is a key ingredient even over links but I don;t think comedy was what you were going for.

          Well said my man.

          Show us some examples Justin.

A live case study maybe ? Let's do a case study for cheap auto insurance in California. That's a 5 words long keyword.

Well, that's not quite what I'm doing. I've done all the onpage SEO for keywords like you mention... I make it to page 2 (small cities) or page 3 o4 4 (medium cities) or page 6 or 7 big cities with a new site and only onpage. and I've done it quite a few times.

I've made it to bottom of page 1 with only onpage with youtubes, for small cities + keyword. But not with a brand new site.

I've made it to the middle of page 1 with only onpage optimization on established sites (and only for city names that exist in only 1 state.

        Small city means population 25-75k.

I totally disagree with you. On-Page and Off-Page both work simultaneously for ranking factors. If you just keep focusing on On-Page and completely ignore Off-Page then how often you expect customer to look into it.
If you customer don't even know you exist on web, then what's the use ?
