I link to nobody unless they pay me, except in rare cases. Like I have some article or post that talks about something. Like if I was doing a post on a google update, I'd sure link to the google announcement. Or if I was doing something on best National Parks, dang sure I'd give links. Neither of those sites would be competitors for what I would be doing. Besides, people landing on your page would dang sure expect to find such a link.

But to just give links because you think that helps....helps what? Nobody has ever answered that question. It's seems rather silly to add links "just because." The same person that started that nonsense must have started the keyword density one.

And linking to a real competitor? Just nonsense. Beyond nonsense.

Do you ever get past nonsense questions? I mean seriously. Something is getting lost in translation because you are just not learning and researching much.

If a "lot" of the people you listen to claim this is true, find a different group of people to hang around.

There has to be a real reason to link to. Now tons of "competitors" link to my sites because they're good references. They don't know any better. They are not doing SEO. They don't view themselves as competition. I even provide link code. Silly me.

Funny how the real world works.

I guess it depends on what kind of website you are running.
If you are a blogger and write great content, I believe you should link to others including your competitors.
Creating value becomes the priority when it comes to valuable content.

You can link to authority websites like Wikipedia unless they compete directly with you on the same keyword. If you really have to link to page but don't want to pass juice just use no follow.
