today i was analyzing one of my competitors backlink profiles and i saw they have a ton high PR directory backlinks.

How do you feel about getting high PR directory backlinks? is it worth it in 2016?

examples:

Submission Marketing Web Directory
USA listing Web Directory
SEO, Submit directory, web marketing, Web Hosting Companies, Forex Currency trading listings, promotion web, promotion site, internet find, business directory, web directory, web site directory, paid web directory, web directories, internet directory.
CraigsList Dir.org
DirectoryVault Free Web Directory
Abstract Directory .net
Free Directory - Directory-Free.Com
LinkDirectory.com | Premium Listings
411 Free Directory .com
Fire Directory.com
A List Directory
Just Directory.org

According to Ahrefs these websites get very little traffic between 0-100 visitors a day and they are not really ranking for any keywords other than their company name / domain name.

How do you determine if its a good directory to get a listed on since DA of these spammny looking directories are high.

me personally, I feel like it would be a good directory to get a backlink from if they rank for high competitive keywords and actually has traffic to the website. but im not sure.. would like to hear from some experts how you determine if a directory is good or not?

Thanks.

We can check if site is giving good backlink or not we should check the PR of a website ranking like alexa, semrush rank are also important. A site with good domain authority is also good for backlink you can check this through moz rank. If directory ranking is not good it will effect your website ranking. It is also very important that we should submit our link to a appropriate catagory. So while creating back link one should consider these parameter if not want your website to be panalised by google
    Hope this will be helpful
    Thank you

Well PageRank doesn't really exist anymore as it has been removed from the Google toolbar. This means that all PR checking services no longer work or are no longer reliable.

The public values for PR haven't even been updated since 2013 so it should have been dumped as a quality metric a long time ago.

As for the main meaning of your question, yes high quality directories can be beneficial for SEO purposes. They are not as powerful as they once were but they can be used as part of a successful SEO campaign providing you also use a variety of linking techniques and keep everything realistic, i.e do not spam thousands of irrelevant links daily.

Always be sure to be keeping quality, relevancy and variation in mind and you should be good.

Focusing solely on PR factor is not right especially if website does not draw enough traffic and has low ranking.

You cannot be successful just by copying your competition's promotion strategy. Your time is must better invested in building the right links at right websites.

Your links should follow the following pattern: relevance, traffic, and how much spam they generate. Everything else, including moz.com is secondary.
