Can increased bounce rate affect Google Rankings?

We've been doing facebook ads for several months now which have worked well for our sales. However, it contributes to an increase in our bounce rate especially for mobile devices. Our target audience basically prefers shopping on desktop computers, they get the ads on a mobile and wander off to research on other sites (amazon) for lower pricing.

Could it be possible that google's thinking that our website has a high bounce rate and is no longer credible for a certain keyword?

  • A high bounce rate will cripple you over time seen this myself, I think your logic does hold about the increased bounce rate affecting your keyword strength.

I would drop the mobile ads depending on revenue they bring in for the keyword for a few weeks, if the revenue is worth the bounce rate then SEO the pages to offset the increased rate, the analysis is the only thing to answer your question.

Could also test landing page try to offset the mobile landings, It's PPC traffic they go where you send them

I'll keep a watch on this I am interested to see how this plays out.

I went through several sites researching if high bounce rates affect rankings but didn't find a site that fully confirms it. i checked as much as i could to see where we are lacking or going south. (using free tools only unfortunately)

hmm dropping the mobile ads might not be the way to go for now, it's peak season for our product. i can probably check when we stop the ads when the season's over. the revenue is quite good actually. so fending off the ads may not be an option now.

i've also tested other landing pages in the past but only for a week and i didn't see any difference. we direct the customers to the item page right away. the rationale i am seeing is that customers drop the page and go to amazon or overstock to look for lower prices.

Increase in bounce rate means the visitors are most likely exiting your site page without navigating the website. This only shows that your audience are not satisfied with your page.

Increasing in Bounce rates means loss of Visitors of your sites i.e. the landing pages of your website is not so attractive to satisfy the audience to stay there for a minute.

it affect but it is not the only factor that effect the ranking, if you have other thing which can compentiate for this then you need not to worry, but yes if possible try to get rid of this asap.

Yes, Increase in Bounce Rate will effect Google rankings a little bit but not fully. Always Bounce rate should be low because user experience with the website is measured with the Bounce rate factor. If the Bounce Rate is low means user is having a good experience with the website and along with the useful Information which he/she searched for.

Update your website & your mobile app to bound the shoppers on your business. It's quite difficult to maintain the number of customers for long time as your competitors would try to impact your sales by offering huge discounts on their products.

No matter what your business is, the way it is presented must be attracted & it should deliver the info which could be of use for the readers of it.

Google does not care about our site's bounce rate.

For many site's, Google doesn't even know what the bounce rate is.

But here is the real reason. A bounce does not always mean a bad thing. It can mean that the person found exactly what they were looking for.

Let's take a real world example. We don't have the data, but I would bet that a site like IMDB has a pretty high bounce rate. Most visitors are looking up something like the name of a cast member in a movie that they recognize. So they do a Google search, IMDB comes up. They visit the page, get the answer, and leave. Sure some people might browse other pages, but I bet their bounce rate is pretty high.

Does that mean it is a bad site or shouldn't show up in the rankings? Nope. It gave the searcher exactly what they want.

Same with Wikipedia. When I pull up a Wikipedia page in search results, I almost never go to another Wikipedia page from that one. I found what I wanted and I move on to something else.
