I finally got around to looking at my top competitors links. They are all over for the keywords I want in a very competitive niche....and they have 5941 Links! Guess I will be pretty busy catching up

I have to say they have a ton of articles that were obviously spun and make no sense at all at most of these links.

Sorry, but I don't really see what your post is aimed at... (it's 2 a.m. local time so i don't see very much anyway^^)

However, it looks to me like your competitor is using a basic link wheel concept to rank his site. But if the crappy sites link directly to his main site, he isn't doing everything right even though he ranks well. This concept would work, in my oppinion, much better if your competitor did the following: sites with crappy content-> sites with handwritten content-> main site.

Yeah, it really looks like you have some hard work to do unless you are already somewhere in the SERPS. I'd also consider checking the quality of the links in terms of anchor text and PR value. If his links suck for these criteria you could probably outrank him with a much smaller amount of quality links.

I'd just focus on getting some quality links. It doesn't matter how many links your competitor has, if you have 10 links that are more relevant and stronger then you could still out them.

I could go out and spend 10 bucks and get 10,000 links.

Doesn't mean it'll do me any good.

Quality always comes first. Focus on the main keyword you want and constantly strive to add high quality links. (They won't be cheap.)

    Is that all?
    Try this one...
    343,154 backlinks
    Site Explorer - Search Results

There is more than one way to skin a cat though.

I outrank these guys in a lot of areas and I have nowhere near what they have. One thing I do different is have good coding standards and keep my sites validating.

See anything different between the two sites regarding code quality?
[Valid] Markup Validation of http://www.homecomputergames.com/ - W3C Markup Validator

[Invalid] Markup Validation of http://www.amazon.com/ - W3C Markup Validator

My redesign that is currently under development takes proper coding to the max. I know without a doubt that having your site validate does help and Google awards in not a small amount for this.

5941 look like hard to beat .but if all of them came from pr0-pr1 then all you need to do is get backlink from pr8 or pr 9 .
