SEO Concern - Lots of pages with just code...

Thanks in advance, guys. This concern is really a monkey on my back.

I have a Wordpress website I am working on with the goal for it to rank in the SERP's.

On this website there is a map of the us. When a state is clicked on, it takes you to a page where the state is broken down into regions.

My concern is this: All of the regions of all of the states are each a Wordpress "page". Each page has a small line of code that makes the state on the site. When the website is done there will be several hundred "pages" (not posts) with only a small line of code on them. (Did I mention I am using 3 plugins to achieve this?)

What will the Google bots think of this? Will it harm my SEO to have several hundred pages with just a short line of code on them even if it is ultimately for a better user experience?

Thank you again. I genuinely appreciate your time.

  • Provided you have other content to speak on on other pages its not a deal breaker. Its doubtful those pages will rank for anything naturally.of course but other pages should still be able to rank.

However I don't know about better user experience. In 2016 with HTML5 and Javascript in particular you shouldn't have to load hundred of pages just to view regions

I am presuming this route is because you are using wordpress and can't get better techniques to work with it?

    • Mike Anthony,

      Thanks for your response.

Yes I'm using Wordpress. Do you know of a better way to do it? The results I want are as follows:

      1. Have a full US Clickable map (I am using Create a Clickable Map to achieve this) Each state can be assigned a URL which I made a page with the state name and "Choose Your Region". (Ex. "Nebraska: choose Your Region")

      2. Click on a state on the US map to follow pre-specified URL

      3. Click on a region to narrow down closer to your area (Using a plugin called "HTML5 Maps") Each region has a specified URL. I created a page for each region (most states have about five regions) and on each page there is a short code for the the next step...

      4. See a directory of shops in that region (Using a plugin called "Connections")

      Is there a better way?

Maybe I'm being a ninny but my two biggest concerns are worrying that Google wont rank me because of my sites structure, and that there's a much faster way to do what i'm doing. Any suggestions are warmly welcomed. Or if I am being a ninny please feel free to say so.

      Thanks
  • Hey guys. I found my own remedy. I am just going to no-index all the pages that I only have the shortcode on.

Look at the text version of your webpage and also run Screaming Frog on the site. Either the text and links are optimized or they're not.

I have no idea what the magic line of code does.

    • No magic code here. The code is just a short code from a plugin that allows a clickable US state to show up that is sorted out by regions - this doesn't matter to my question.

I've decided to no-index these pages because they aren't any use in Google. They are just a useful function for my website.

Thanks for your advice on Screaming Frog. I'll take a look.
