The Big Autoblogging debate

OK, we are having a big debate here at work about automatic blog posts and I wanted to get some input.

Our boss wants to get more traffic to our "money-making" site by using a wordpress blog. We are so swamped here with writing articles for other blogs, that he wants to use the "autoblogged" plugin. He sees other sites that are "scraping" content and are high in the rankings with a good quality score. There are those here at work who are firm in their belief that any sort of automatic blogging on a money site will result in us getting "dinged" by Google. Autoblogging should only be done on 3rd tier sites.

There are others who feel that if we scrape, that it may not help, but it won't hurt either. FYI: we have other content on the site as well--the blog would be in a separate folder on the same site.

So what says everyone? Yea or nay? Thanks!

  • I say GO for it. I have many auto-blogs and some are pagerank 4 and all I did was configure the plugin. Some even rank higher than the original source.
  • I'm sorry, but I have to disagree.

If you 'follow the rules' and set up RSS feeds that keep all links in tact, you're doing nothing but helping the original sites through building their back links. Google isn't going to award you anything for republishing someone else's content. They've already indexed the content. In most cases, whatever site has the higher pagerank is the site that gets the credit. This probably won't be your site. If your site had a higher pagerank you wouldn't even be considering this.

If you do this in a shady way and don't follow the rules, you're being unethical and stealing someone else's content. You're opening yourself up to civil litigation.

Auto-blogs are lazy. Content is king. Create your own content.

    • Hey if you had 50 sites and needed to write about 50 articles for each one, you wouldn't be saying that...lol...

    • You couldn't be more wrong.

1.) If you set all your outgoing links to no-follow, your not passing any link juice to the original source.

2.) Just cause a higher PR site had it first doesn't mean you still can't rank for other keywords in the original content. It's no different then submitting 1 article to multiple directories.

3.) Autoblogs are for the person who understands leverage, not laziness. I would rather have 25 fully optimized themed autoblogs that are all gaining consistant traffic and income, that write my own unique content each day for One blog that takes forever to build. Content may be king, but the numbers don't lie.

And lastly, of course anyone that does anything shady will get in trouble whether it's an auto blog or a regular blog. If you read the rules of article directories, they say that as long as people keep the author box intact, than your free to use the content. Which if you think about it, is no different than guest blogging and putting your author bio on that blog. So get your facts strait.
  • Search Engine like google will not noticed this at first but once they find it out they will penalized your website
  • Another plugin for autoblogging that keeps you legit, is Article Autoposter. I grabs articles from Article Base, which are intended to be shared, and keeps the resource box in place as per the TOS.

The maker of this particular plugin has a bunch of others also, that will let your run an autoblog in a completely above board way, without stepping on any toes.

Here's the article poster: Lunatic Studios| WP Article Autoposter

And the guy's main site for his whole range of plugins: WP Robot - Premium Wordpress Autoposting Plugin

    • In my opinion, the best solution to get themed articles on autopilot is a membership at Matt Callen's myarticlenetwork.com.

You can set the amount of articles you want to receive and you can choose the category or several categories you want to receive the articles for. You're also able to automatically disaprove articles which aren't at least 30% unique. So you receive some kind of unique articles to your blog.

You also can submit your own articles to the network which builds a lot of backlinks to your blog.

This way you're not only going to receive some traffic from the other blogs your articles has been submitted to, but this will also improve your search engine ranking.

I use it for a lot of my blogs and I love it.

  • @debra:

I'm all for mashups. But in the mashup needs to be something that belongs to you. Your content. Your little piece that is original and unique. If a mashup is nothing but content from somewhere else, you're not creating value.

My favorite mashup: HotPads - Map Search for Real Estate, Apartments & Houses for Rent, Foreclosures and Homes for Sale

They've taken other people's content, mashed it up, added their own content, and created a value add.

    • Your right and wrong on this one. Yes I agree that value should always be number one. But I also disagree, because, if you can provide and all in one resource on a subject that people are interested in, than I would say that also is very valuable.

  • I am not sure how you can suck at autoblogging?

I mean, it's really easy. It's the easiest, fastest thing to set up.

What do you mean, you suck?
  • I dunno, I keep finding little problems and it doesn't get setup =P Like, I tried setting up a plugin, but it turns out I needed WordPress 2.5.2 or something, then I tried uploading it using FTP and then that failed.

And obviously you don't know how I blog =P
