    Search engines like Google say that they do not use schema markup to rank websites but some of us are very skeptical about that. Pretending that is true, there is an important reason for using schema markup which is that your listings will really stand out and take up more space on the search results pages. If you have product reviews with a bunch of gold stars, a searcher's eyes are immediately drawn to that listing, for instance. When your listing stands out, it usually gets clicked more. Many recent studies show that the more a listing gets clicked in comparison to others on the page, the higher it will rise in the rankings.

    Alissa, if you search google for the certain keyword, say "cake recipe reviews" you'd often get results that have Star ratings, Number of Reviews, post Image and other similar details. For e.g look at the image below





    I'm sure you must have noticed similar results before. These are implemented using Schema Markup. Basically, you define certain properties as a defined type of data to help Search engines understand your content in a better way.


    Main Advantage : Helps increase CTR of the website. And as Dave points out several of recent studies suggest that a High CTR might indirectly influence your SERP rankings
