How many backlinks do I need?

I have an 2 years old blogspot site, with about 15 posts. The posts were made all 2 years ago, then I abandon it. I have about 120 backlinks on my domain, (acording to Traffic Travis). All of them are nofollow.

I'm chasing a keyword with 2900 searches per month and 590 in USA, and my site had this keyword in title and adress. I'm having this keyword in about 12 posts. I'm only on 4th page of Google.

I'm also having 2-3 long tail keywords with 50 - 200 searches per mounth. My keywords are very poor at CPC (I didn't know that when I chose them 2 years ago).

I saw that my competitors had between 0 - 40 backlings to their page where they had my keyword. Most of them have 0, but they all rank better than me. Also most of them had more than 3000 backlinks on their entire domain.

I don't think that I have a big competition for this keyword. I only want to beat them and be in the first 5 results, and then I want to make other websites with profitable keywords, not like this.

What should I do next to climb in SERP?

  • There is no way you can see all the backlinks of a site. The search engine didn't give anyone or tool that autonomy.

Don't judge the ranking of a site by the number of backlinks you can see using a backlink tool.

A site may have hundreds of links and still rank better than sites with millions.

SEO is no longer a game of quantity but quality.
  • There's no way to know sure (and even if you did know, it would always be fluctuating).

Your competitors are always losing/gaining backlinks, which will have an affect on your rankings.

There are ways to track approximately how many backlinks you'll need to rank for a specific keyword.

To do this, check out Ahrefs.com and click on "keywords explorer".
  • Thanks for your replyes, but I know that all softs that claim to know the number of backlinks are inexact. I prefer Traffic Travis because it's free and they found 120 backlinks on my site, while other free backlinck checkers found only about 10 - 20 backlinks.

Well, in Trafic Travis I have 120 backlinks, while others have thousands, or ten of thausands. Mine are all nofollow. The keyword had 2900 searches per month, and I'm on 4th page in SERP.

Backlinks to the keyword pages are low on these websites too, that's why I think I can beat them. Also my website it's optimized for that keyword. The question is, aproximatelly how many backlinks will be enough, dofollow or nofollow?
    • [2] replies
    • 3456 dofollow & 234 nofollow approximately.

Seriously who knows - you should start building more and seeing what effect they have instead of trying to come up with a number.

1 link can be more powerful than 1 million links - so how can anyone give you a number without knowing how powerful the links you are going to be building are.

Also how does anyone know what your competitors are up to? They might be building powerful links also, which again will effect the number.

    • If it were that easy, we'd all be millionaires

In all seriousness, keep building backlinks to the page until you rank. It's as simple as that (assuming that you have reason to believe that you can outrank the first 3 spots).
  • @jamesbrands , I don't think it will be posible for me to have 1 link as powerful as 1 milion others, because almost all my backlinks are crap links. All are nofollow, most are blog comments on other sites in my niche, and 1-2 on forums. That's why I guess it won't be a hard question to guess how many backlinks will be sufficient.

Also I'm planning to start making dofollow backlinks on web2 sites. That's why I wanted to know if this will be enough to be on first page for a keyword with 2900 searches
  • You could need 1 good link, or 100 good links to rank. It's completely random and solely dependent on how well the competition's websites are built. So, check them out and you'll get an idea on what kinds of backlinks you'll need.

  • It's really depends on your keywords competition. But could tell how many backlinks do you need exactly. However, you can get an idea that how many backlinks do you need by researching your competitors.
  • You need to have more with good anchor text than your competitors. One you hit top spot slow it right down.
  • download the moz plugin for the chrome browser, this will help you then do a search for the keywords you are competing for, now you can see the page authority, domain authority and links of the sites you want to compete with, once you have that info you know what you have to do to match you take over their ranking

  • It's easy to say. When you rank #1, come back and let us know. Then we'll all know.

You don't need a single nofollow link, however.

Mentioning nofollow links is as ridiculous as the question.

  • quality backlink is important then number backlink . If your site have many many backlink with low quality, google will think your site is spam

    • Exactly, quality over quantity!

Years ago it was all about quantity, but not anymore. The old rules don't apply. In SEO it's more about quality these days.

  • No one can provide you a definite answer to this question.
Did you checked the keyword competition? If not do that right now over Kwfinder or Keyword revealer and if that comes as easy or medium keyword.

Then start optimizing your articles also no need to use same keyword on multiple articles that will just confuse google and will not result good for you. Do good onpage SEO with that you should find yourself on page 2 easily (if the keyword is easy)

Then go for some social shares and some guest posts and you will easily find yourself on page #1

  • I think there's no magic formula of how many backlinks you need to post everyday. It depends on your quality of the website, your keywords, your competitors, your content,...and many other onpage factors. However you should try to focus on quality instead of quantity, I think so.
  • you should be effort to build as many good backlinks as possible.

  • Don't think about backlinks! First think you have to remember is give value for your posts. Always make quality articles for targeting 2-3 keywords. Try to make backlinks from niche sites. That is the key thing
  • Go for quality content and quality backlinks - that will make sure that you rank high on the SERPs and get a lot of traffic.
  • To move up in rankings, you will need to get more quality backlinks to your website. However, you also need to make sure that you start publishing quality content consistently overtime. 15 posts is not going to be good enough. I recommend publishing one new quality post per day on your website. You will need to combine this process with getting quality backlinks. Your rankings will be able to improve when the content and backlink process is combined together.

  • Do you have any .gov or .edu backlinks to your site? Try adding a few and see if that improves your ranking compared to your competition.
    • [1] reply
    • How does one go about getting .edu and .gov backlinks on a personal blog though?
  • Build quality backlinks to your site and to support it, add lots of quality content. Delivering to your readers should be your first priority and you will automatically see a rise in rankings.

  • You need as many high quality back links that you can get. It has to be really from authority sites. Get your backlinks naturally and not so fast.

Aside from backlinking, it is also beneficial to drive traffic to your site from social networking sites like facebook and twitter. Once google sees you have traffic from this sites, they boost your position. This has been one of my secrets for maintaining top 1-10 positions in my blogspot blogs.

    Good luck.

  • nofollow links have no value for SEO or SERP. Numbers are not the sign of quality, try to get links from authority sites with a keyword anchor text. It's very hard to get.
Also, you have to use a high-level domain, I have one 2 years old domain. Send a PM to get it.
  • you need to build more backlinks, as much as possible. Your website will be strong again
    • [1] reply
    • nah, not necessarily

you need top target links - with a power to enforce

all other links = nobody cares - even G says: What da fugg?
  • Quality matter not quantity.A single link with high DA is better than 100 low DA backlinks.

  • the QUALITY of back-links is FAR more important that the number.

Low-quality back-links will DECREASE your traffic. Anyone who's owned a directory-site (or any site with some links) will know this very obviously . . . 15 years ago, such a site would get lots of requests for adding links. Then about 10 years ago this decreased, and since then, there has been an increasing number of requests for link REMOVAL.

So create the best quality back-links you can. Social-media used well will create high quality back-links, as will guest-posting, and once you've got those going well, you can add a relatively small number of forum signature (and profile) links from RELEVANT forums, and also informative comments on relevant blogs.

Please understand this perspective . . . quality not quantity, because it can easily make the difference between doing things which will get you MORE traffic, and doing things which get you LESS traffic !

  • In link building:- The right approach is not to set targets but to steadily and naturally build links on a consistent basis. Link building is an on-going process, without a target in mind. Even when you reach the top of Google you shouldn’t stop building links. As soon as you stop you’re giving your competitors a better chance of overtaking you. So, quality links keep building links slow and steady.

  • You can create high-quality backlinks. I suggest you to concentrate on quality rather than quantity.
You can make approx. 70% do follow links and 30% no follow links. You've mentioned that you have nofollow link, try to create some dofollow links too.

  • Other than build quality backlinks Do we need to make an articles? influence to the page rank too?
  • The more you want to achieve (in terms of keyword targets, rankings and visitor numbers), the more backlinks you’ll need. You can potentially rank your business’s website with literally just a few backlinks, but that would be for low competition keywords with low search volumes, meaning you would get few visitors to your site.
  • No one can judge how many backlinks can assist a website to get the top position in Google search engine. It depends on the quality of the backlinks and the choice of websites which has been used in making a backlink. The more you are precise with the features of your business the more its chance to engage the viewers towards it. Nowadays, an interesting content that could obligates the readers to smile is also liked by all. So, make few backlinks by using the right marketing technique in the right direction and get the best advantage of it.

  • It depends on how much competition you have. If you take 10 quality backlinks daily, your ranking will boost up.

  • There is no specific answer to this question.
All one should care about is the quality of back links other than quantity of them.
Although, having a great content definitely helps but where one publishes their content also matters.
(Article directories & unnecessary Social Bookmarking should be avoided at all costs, it does not help and may also negatively affect rankings)
Share the content where necessary and modify it with unique & attractive infographics according to the platform/website requirement.

  • If you are thinking about numbers, YOU GOT IT WRONG
If you believe in numbers, YOU GOT IT WRONG

Give fresh quality content every day you will be distinguished from the lot AND I WILL RANK YOU BETTER.

Why should you be building links to the same content which did not rank better 2years ago and you expect it to rank better today?
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • As all knows Google violates link building and it wants to be genuine and present your viewers the right info which you are providing as your service. Still, link building is on the go and the professionals says that a quality link containing a useful info of a business won't be termed as spam by Google and this helps to upsurge the rank of a website easily.

What matters for a website is its ON Page and the implementation of a right digital marketing technique. Make sure you links whether it be hundreds or thousands a week, it must be of huge quality, then only it can be effective for getting the attention of people whom you are targeting.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • It would be a miracle if you rank high in search results with only 15 posts and no new content for the past two years. Just focus on updating your site with new quality content and share them on social media. Research the top questions on your niche and find the information gap. Research new keywords, or combination of keywords.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • What you are missing is constancy.

You have been 2 years without posting anything new, that's what you get.

Reactive your site, create content and publish it at time intervals of few days or a week.

Grow it slowly but steady and at some point, you will be in the ranking you are looking for.

TOP 1 TIP: Be constant creating content!
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Don't focus on quantity nowadays as it won't matter now. Before quantity was I think the measure but today it won't affect you in anyway. The best thing to do is focus on quality and your site itself and better define your goal. Natural links matter so it's better to just do your work and focus on creating quality post with point keywords that can drive your site up to search engines.
