Why is my website not ranking for the keyword "african documentaries" on Google?

I have a website called oddafrica which has videos of traditional rituals practiced in Africa. I have a traffic of around 10,000 mostly from youtube.
You can take a look at the site and see that I should rank for the keyword "african documentaries".
Are the videos playing well or what is the problem with the website?

Traffic doesn't guarantee rankings in Google search. You need to optimize your web pages for search engines. A lot of newbies always make the mistake of thinking that Google ranks websites.

Google doesn't rank websites, it ranks web pages or blog posts (which is also a web page). So what you need to do is to make sure that you optimize one of the web pages on your website to rank for the keyword "african documentaries".

It doesn't end there though coz that's just on-page optimization, you also need to do some off-page seo as well. This is also known as link building, you can also use social media to attract some organic backlinks as well. But it's not guaranteed that you'll get organic backlinks, unless your content is really good. That is why you have to do the off-page seo yourself or outsource it so that you don't rely on luck.

Once you have the on-page and off-page seo sorted then you should be able to find your site in search engine results. That's if you do things right btw.

The real problem is that it is a pretty sick site. I'm no prude, and to each his own, but the site really is like some kind of weird S&M fetish site, which you're trying to legitimatize by using the word "documentary." I feel like plucking my eyes out with a soup spoon, but unfortunately the memory would remain.

      On a lighter, brighter note:

With the huge amount of crappy, nonsense advice given in this forum, it's refreshing to see a nice, well-thought out summary of rankings. And a first post to top it off (most first time posters are spammers or robots). Helpful info for newbies, but unfortunately won't get much exposure in this thread.

Nope your site should rank for nothing. In fact google should consider deindexing it so it does not even rank for its name.

  • Hi,
following the proper on-page seo parameters set by google, doing keyword research and having unique & non-plagiarized content in your site will always be helpful in ranking your webpage higher because google's bot is always on the lookout for the best available content depending on the search query, hence the keyword optimization.
