Website Taxonomy for SEO

Hi everyone!

New member and first post so go easy on me

I'm working with a client to migrate their website from a Kentico CMS to WP and in doing so I am amending parts of the site's on-page attributes and general structure.

First off, does anyone have any tools/resources/guides to defining a clear and SEO-friendly site taxonomy (i.e. URL paths/site structure)?

Second, once I've changed the names of pathways to become more user and keyword oriented, how do I ensure that pages that were previously ranking under the poorer site taxonomy retain their level of visibility in the SERPs?

Looking forward to hearing the community's expertise!

Best,

The simplest sites structure is Home > Category > Post/Page. That's basically what's called an SEO silo. In Wordpress you can skip Category & Post and simply use Parent/Child Pages.

    Example site structure:
    • Home
      • Parent
        • Child

Make sure you 301 the old pages to the new pages or you will end up resetting the "Google clock" and any rankiongs you have. For wordpress there are plenty of plugins to 301. Hope this helps.
