Therefore, it would be best to review your current link building approach to ensure that you’re not violating the rules. Otherwise, you might end up getting penalized by Google and your website could suffer long-term.

Using article submission is completely acceptable, this being said, you will want to submit an original content ( not spinned content one ). Also make sure if you submitting to an article directory, you are submitting to a worthy site like ezine article etc

No, it's not ok. It's crap links If you're lucky.

If that's the best plan you have for link building you need to find a better plan. At best, it will do nothing; at worst it will hurt your site. I'm talking long term here, not short term. Lots of things that will ultimately penalize your website are working for the time being.

I know a whole lot of people still believe in this and in other bad link building practices because they have been led into a false sense of security because Penguin has not been run in almost 2 years. When they do run that filter again, which they say will be soon, there are going to be a whole lot of very unhappy people.

I should add, however, that article submission, in and of itself, is not bad, provided that you submit something completely different to each place. Even unique posts will get little to no bump from an article submission directory, though. It is very rare that you see an EZine article ranking on page one these days, for example.

I'd recommend guest posting on a good, related blog long before using an article directory.

Most of the reputable article submission sites are not accepting content anymore and the others are closed for registration. So its better to use another mediums in the web to establish your site.

I think that article submission works with low frequency requests and keywords mostly. I think that with Google as well as with any other Search Engine that is important to keep balance and do not overload specific sites with your articles. Article Submission is good for the SEO but Right now most of the sites of the article submission are not come with good authority and they are not too trust able sites for submitting valuable content. I would weather go with the WEB 2.0 and guest posting they are much more helpful then article submission.

Article submission is a good strategy to generate back links as long as you do it only with a few (3-4) high PR websites or sites which have a high link influence score. However, I would not suggest link building through continuous article submissions, it would generate back links but they won't have any influence over rankings.

I would say when penguin update has come from that day article submission is gone completely but still if you want to do link building through article sites do prefer the website which provides nofollow links. Or else I would suggest instead of article submission do web 2.0.

I stopped doing article marketing. I used to post articles on ezine articles and few other article marketing websites, used to work good but since last year i m not seeing any improvements with it.
The most useful things you can use an article directory site for to get topic ideas and then rewrite in their own words for their own sites, because there is no ranking perk from submitting to them.
