Strategy to avoid duplicate content

I have a customer who is expanding, but I need advice on duplicate content implications and best practice.

The customer is now offering their services in 2 states on opposite sides of the country. The customer wants to duplicate the site but just change the State name on all references throughout the 2nd site - using 2 separate domains.

My recommendations were to either (A) add an additional page and focus the content for that state, or (B) create a 2nd site, but rewrite the content entirely.

My customer wants the easiest way out of course - what are your suggestions?

  • Solution number one will be cheaper than number two.
It depends also on the budget for SEO and what is the competition in each state.
  • I did option number one and it works well and is the cheapest and the easiest to manage but jumble the content around so it can't be seen as duplicate.
  • I appreciate the 2 comments. I'll move forward with Option A.

    Thanks again
  • Keep in mind that you run afoul of Google only if the duplicate content appears on the same site; same content on different sites is not duplicate content Google speaks against.

And that Google shows only one of 2 of the same. That said, I have the same content with different city on different sites, and Google is showing all sites (for keyword + city) but only the first site for some of the other keywords (I mean, my 2nd site is not in any of the 930 positions available though the older site is on page 1).

I am saying that, based on my experience, I can rank the same content on 2 different site for: Des Moines Chiropractor and Denver Chiropractor but I can only rank one of them for: great chiropractor for kids, for instance.

    • No errors here, just figuring out what's the best way to move forward. Copyscape and such things can't help.

  • The reality is... no one knows how google will respond for sure. The absolutely best bet is to hire a writer off Fivvr to re-write the content. I found plenty there and the work is good. They'll re-write the content and specifically design it to not come up as a match on google for duplicate content. Go to Fivvr now and look for content writers and you'll find a ton of really good writers who'll give you quality work.

  • First of all you need understanding you need relevant keyword rich content on your website each page have unique title, check website learn more about duplicate content use google webmaster tool, you can search duplicate of your content in the online website.
  • The first option is easy to do if your customer agree on it, however, you could make it rewriting if your customer likes to do it. It depends on your customer's wish and you have to make him satisfied.
