A guy told me he wants some marketing work done, he doesn't have a standalone site, just a page on Manta, would that be much more difficult to rank than having his own site on google please?

That would be a pretty bad idea.

    1. Manta is not optimized to generate conversions for business listings.
    2. The amount of data you can put into Manta is pretty limited versus a standalone website.
    3. He doesn't own Manta. His business listing could disappear at any moment, and then any money he spent to market that page would be completely wasted.

What I recommend for your friend is to start his own site.

Being dependent on Manta will not help to his/her business.

If he/she doesn't know how to create a website from scratch, in Upwork there are plenty of professional/trustworthy freelancers that can make a new website for he/she.

It's better to spend some time in the foundations of your website/business and build safely on top of that.

I agree with Mike, he need to start his own site, away from bad SEO it is also bad business as he doesn't own the page.

First and foremost, I would suggest you to advise him to put up his own website. If he never set up a website before, he may have an impression that setting up a website is a complicated thing that requires big commitment and fund. Assure him that is not the case. A simple 3-5 page website with simple pages like about us, product intro, contact us will take a 1-3 hours max to put together.

    - Having a website of his own will allowed him to have more control over his own asset. He owns the domain, the website and the site will always be there unless he choose to shut it down.
    - The cost for having a simple website is very low. Just a domain and hosting, which is below $80 per year (compared to $99/month for Manta Premium)
    - Having own website makes it easy for him to do SEO or edit any parts without requires further cost.

Why not you propose him a website start-up + marketing package...

That's a whole other issue, here in NY where there are tons of craigslist ads advertising 5 page websites for as little as a few hundred dollars it's very hard to convince someone they should pay top dollar so pricing is always a major issue. In other words if you're a web designer and wants 1k to build a commercial site, the average person would say "why should I pay you 1k when others are doing the same thing for $300"? If you tell them about quality, functionality e.t.c of the site they usually don't care.

Regarding monthly SEO fee, same deal. The average freelancer here will charge $400 per month, outsourcing they can get from $100. So due to the massive competition here, everyone is going under the lowest pricing in order to have a chance to get the job.

Just out of curiosity, is there a reference anywhere which shows what a freelance web designer should charge and what a freelance marketer should charge?

Anyone trying to compete with prices at the bottom of the barrel is going to struggle.

Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, and Audi do not drop their prices to compete with Hyundai. They charge what they feel they are worth and make no apologies for the price.

You should never rely on things that are not under control. Having a personal website will open many doors and he will have loads of space to do A/B tests and several more things.

Yes, if your friend is really serious about marketing their website, they should get their own domain and hosting package. It's well worth it and they will have much more control over it than they would with Mantra. You'll need to be able to customize certain things on your site to be really effective at SEO.
