Hi,

I've had an issue which I find a bit confusing/frustrating. Hoping someone can shed some light on this!
I have a niche site and I have several keywords which I am targetting and in some cases I have started to rank in the top 10 for them. But there is only one post page for my site that seems to get highly ranked for them, and not the specific posts I wrote for those specific keywords. So even if I have been ranking for those keywords its not the inner pages I want, but always that same article within the niche site (as a niche site its obviously related but not really matching for that keyword). I imagine this has an impact on the CTR for those links.

Any ideas what is causing this and if there is anything I could do to resolve it?
Or maybe just be happy one of my pages is ranking?!

Thanks
H

You need to make sure you're not unwittingly engaging in keyword cannibalisation, where more than one page targets the same set of terms.

A simple checklist you could keep in mind:
    1) Are the keywords you're targetting on each page unique enough from one another in terms of "intent". Google will determine the "user intent" behind a search term and then find the most authoritative page for that term, if this page that is ranking seems to match the intent best, then it will continue to show that resutl.

    2) are you inter-linking from this target page to your other pages with the right anchor text? Doing so can send a signal to google saying that these pages are more appropriate for those terms.

    3) are those other pages as accessible, i.e. they're one or two levels deep from your home page as this page? Pages buried deep inside will have less of a chance ranking on top.

It can adversely affect your click-through rate and conversion rate and traffic because of an unsuitable title or description.
