Title already ask what I'd like to know.

I would love to switch theme and edit content, purchased the Moto theme which launched these days

BUT

I'm terrified to lose my first page rankings when I do so.

Do I overreact ? And what I should do to avoid the drop?

I get all clients over the site, no acquisition, so falling off of first page would be a disaster

Many thanks

whenever you edit content there is such a risk. If by moto you mean motopress (hey there are so many wordpress themes you never know if there are two with similar names) then layout will probably be different maybe with content elements in different places.

Some people therefore would say don't change but you have to change sometime and it might even be for the better. I'd say take it slow, maybe build new pages first and try to rank those, or some would say put a redirect in so that you can switch back easily (I think people have gone a little too crazy with redirects). The good news is as long as you don't do anything drastic and your site is ranking on the power of incoming links then the dives or rises can be managed by you if you do SEO or your SEO pro.

but before going full hilt - when you say edit the content what do you mean? How extensive?

Switching to themes and changes in the content is normal but it will affect the performance in the web. Redirection if needed and establishing the site content changes to its related field would be a good signal to retain your reputation in Google.

I think that your web site your web site was designed for your clients and visitors and not for SE. So any changes on your web site related to improving usability would be useful action for sure.
Even if you drop I believe you will be able to get back since you had managed to reach the #1 position.

Changing the theme & the contents of the website is called as Update. Don't worry as it won't effect your ranking much. But, you need to know that your website must be user friendly & it should contain quality content with attractive images. Even the ON Page on your website must be done correctly as per the algorithms of Google. If it fulfills all the requirements of Google then it will retain its position in Google search engine for long time unless its requirement falls down.

Yes switching themes and editing content can surely effect your rankings.
Like if the theme makes your website pages load faster then you will surely see some rise in your rankings too but if the vice versa happens then it can bring down your ranks too

And editing content also worked best for me so I dont think you should have any problem with that.
