Importance of Mega-Articles?

Hey, just a quick question about internet marketing. It seems like as the internet has grown, a lot of websites in different niches have gotten very big and it's become more and more difficult to compete on SEO if you're working in your basement and trying to outrank a 100-page or 200-page websites.

As big websites developed with loads of content and engagement, it became important for niche websites to have larger and larger articles, but it seems like a lot of places are still publishing 500-700 word articles right now.

Is it really beneficial for websites going for ranks to publish articles of 5000+ words on a singular topic with focus on one keyword? Some people do this and seem to get results from it, but is that really better than just adding 10 pages of 500wd content to the website?

  • jipolis - this article is a fantastic resource and basically exactly what I was getting at. I'm about to check out the 35,000 word "What is Code?" article mentioned in that piece - this is the type of content that I feel is going to define the future of content marketing. Marketers need to tackle more serious challenges when it comes to content creation, and an attempt like that to answer a really big question or create a truly authoritative article on something is a great way of doing that.

    I honestly feel like short articles are played out and that the trend is going to continue to move upward. If Google is putting the best content at the top, whoever does the best work and includes the most information is going to be getting there. Marketers should be looking to create large, authority pieces, not little articles designed to boost rankings.
  • I think it depends on the niche. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depends on your skill set and time), marketers have to create epic pieces of content because, first, content needs to be that long because the topic is in-depth!

    Also, your content is being judged compared to content from other marketers.

    Last thing, huge pieces of quality content are the only avenue I believe for creating content on your website (if you are small like me). You can use small points of traffic likes FB groups, forums, reddit, blogs, growth hackers, and more to promote it.

    Also, marketers are more willing to backlink to these articles (find a broken backlink perfect for your article?)

    But I think other industries don't have nearly the same requirements as the marketing industry.

    In my previous experience, my last website, my first article was 3000+ on SEO copywriting, it got 125+ shares and 1.1k views.

    It wasn't amazing, but it had research and effort and people value that. Plus it helped me land a couple deals.
