Some people swear by a theme and/or wordpress but you can rank almost any theme any theme. However unless you have something very special I can't see a good reason to build a theme from scratch.

NO pre-created themes wont have any issues over rankings. If you really want after purchasing theme you will also get all the files you can easily edit it out as per your needs.

I dont think you creating a new theme would be any helpful or a good decision as it will cost you more money than already created theme and will also take a bit of time.

Themes like Avada are built for the masses so odds are the theme will be bloated with stuff you will never use.

Look at the text version of the theme demo (example) and compare it to the live demo. Is content/links hidden on the text version (ex: javascript)?

Usually themes are built to be pretty because pretty sells to the masses and SEO is only an afterthought.

Do your own research.

Definitely save your time and purchase a beautiful theme. I've used avada and they are quite excellent and they won't hurt your SEO at all. Its about the content you put on your site, inbound links etc.
