Real SEO Success Stories

Please forgive me if this question is too simple or overly broad, but I'm still new to the world of online marketing and SEO and I have a lot of questions.

Throughout my time at school, my professors would tell us that SEO died out years ago after Google made the ranking algorithms more and more complex. I left my IT and marketing courses with the impression that SEO is some sort of black magic that offered very little real benefit when compared to more "traditional" marketing methods.

After doing a little research on my own, I've found plenty of "believers". This leads me to believe that there must be something to SEO.

I came to this forum hoping to find at least a few people that have been able to successfully rank and drive large amounts of traffic to their site via SEO activities. If this is you, were you able to rank on the first page? What was your monthly traffic like once you met your ranking goal? Also, how long did it take for you to reach that goal?

Again, I apologize if this question is outside of the scope of this forum. I look forward to learning from each and every one of you. Thanks!

Sorry but there is no one answer to those questions because it all depends on your niche and the competitiveness of your keywords.

Your professors though were TOTALLY clueless. SEO is alive, well, millions of site owners use it and hundreds of major companies still hire professional SEOs.

      Thanks for the response, Mike.

I understand there's no one answer, but I was hoping to maybe get a little personal insight from someone like yourself? Or is that even possible without disclosing information that gives you a competitive advantage? Again, I'm a total SEO noob.

Yes and top three giving it enough time.

was your monthly traffic like once you met your ranking goal?
Depending on terms that could be anywhere from 100 visits a month (on long tail/) to 50,000 or more

Also, how long did it take for you to reach that goal?
Two weeks to 8 months. It REALLY is that wide depending on the niche and keywords.

I think that many people think that SEO is a form of marketing onto itself. This is not the case! SEO will help your marketing efforts in regards to visibility in search engines and driving more traffic but it should not be viewed in a vacuum..

SEO is alive and well - and you should adhere to best practices to ensure your site has the best chance of organic success but it is only one part of the larger pie that is marketing.

In regards to ranking on page 1 - The value of this largely depends on the Niche that you are in. Google has made lots of changes to the SERP and organic rankings are getting pushed down further and further. While been in the top 3 organic rankings of page 1 will certainly help drive more traffic there are lots of other considerations that come into play in regards to value that you get from that traffic.

The one thing I will say is this - Organic Google rankings on page 1 is great. No doubt! But it is no longer the be all and end all. There are many ways to skin a fish and Google is no longer the only game in town!!

As a matter of fact it's kind of true. Reason because if you're master in selecting good ad words that have the ability to bump up your rank in the searches then you're the king out there for sure.
