Backlinks are good, true. But the real key to SEO success now is highly focused, original long content. Do a search for "Brian Lam, Recode interview with Peter Kafka" on google. Brian Lam started TheWireCutter, a website that reviews technology gadgets and tech stuff.

He states in the interview above that the key to his organic traffic was really long, well-written posts... and I mean long. They were like 2500 words on each post. The content strategy he used was also important. You should really listen to the interview.

BTW_ Brian's website, TheWireCutter, was just sold to The New York Times for $30 million.

If you have any follow-up questions let me know!

Yeah, and The WireCutter has a few hundred thousand backlinks.

Original long content does not rank webpages. Original short content works, as does unoriginal short content or unoriginal long content.

RE "Original long content does not rank webpages."

Just to be clear: It's not me who said that. Brian Lam (the guy who sold his website for $30 M) said that in the interview above. I apologize for not being clearer. So you can debate the point but I can't respond to something someone else said.

RE; your comment that they have "few hundred thousand backlinks" :

... according to Moz they only have about 14,697 inbound links, not "a few hundred thousand".

And many of those links are from Gizmodo, the website Brian used to write for. The rest seem to have to do with his sale of the website.

You may be right, maybe short original content works too. I did not comment about short or long content or whether it ranks well.

I have written a lot of original content for my blog over the course of 5 years. I have also paid to have articles researched and written. I then send these articles out of Onlywire. I often get my ass kicked by fairly crappy sites with very little content. I'm not an SEO, so I don't know, but I am assuming that they have a better backlink profile. I can just tell you that as a mater of fact that content alone does very little.

Some information which might help you,
First make sure your website is focused on one thing, you can include other things in it but one essential message should be there in each of it.
Secondly mention your keywords, where ever it is important. The key word should be included everywhere in the title of the website, domain name, description, page content. Practically every where you can
This step is important, so you may want to do a little keyword research before choosing a topic.
If you are on WordPress, you can change a lot of this in the General Settings or through a plugin like All in One SEO Package
Also you should link to the internal pages on your website, you should intentionally link your most important pages to your homepage and cross link them with one another. You can also use a permalink structure that includes keywords. Use a URL structure that includes text, and make sure to include that in keyword of the website as well.
Any large files or plug in which slow down your website need to be removed from there because that will annoy people and they wont visit your website often.
As I've mentioned before use keywords in everything even in your images, retitle the images with the keywords as well
You should also link other websites which have relevant content do it sparingly but do it that way people will click your links and trust your website on a particle topic
Your website needs to be up to date, the more updated it is the more it'll. Show on the search engines. Look at why blogs run more mainly cause they are updated so much.
You also need to index your website on the search engines, such as Google. Make sure it's crawling your website in order for people to find it.
The same way you are linking to other websites, you should ask others to link to you as well

Hope this helps ask for more questions if you have any

Backlink, quality backlinks and quality backlnks.

Simply posting long content without links will rank nothing competetive.

I apologize if this has already been asked, but I've head of the long original content idea before.

Is it that you can fit more keywords when there's more text?

Once ever 3 or 4 months, I analyze which of my pages get ranking for long tails on the Googles second page. I then poor more link juice on them and watch them flourish on the top of organic search for these keywords.

Arrange your list of keywords by their Average Position in Webmaster Tools, scroll down to positions 11 and lower. Run these keywords with Keyword Planner and select those with higher volume.

The quicker solution would be to buy a tool like Serpstat which shows the breakdown of your domain by pages and subdomains with keywords and their positions for each page. And apply filters to show which pages you have that got ranking keywords on the 11th to 20th positions.

After you identified your keywords you can use them as anchors to give them a push to the top.

The first thing that you should know and do it first is:
On Page Optimization: Before creating backlinks do On Page of your site or pages. like title, meta keywords, descriptions, alt tag, use proper h1 tag tag targeted to your keyword etc.
after that do off page activity that is creating backlinks.
Content is a king so try to right your own blogs, do "Guest Posting" and link to you website by using anchor text linking.
Read the Google guideline about content's keywords density, proximity etc

Website should have meta-title, keywords, description of page, good internal linking of pages, balanced use of images with tags, proper content and easy to use for visitors. If your website meets all such requirements then nobody can stop you for getting the sales you are expecting.
