Hello everybody! I wanted to write a short list of some of the steps i make sure i do before i launch a site or a client site. This are really the basics and most people know this information but hopefully will help someone.

1. Make sure your website has SEO friendly URLs.

2. All title tags are unique, have a maximum of 70 characters and begin with your target keyword

3. All description tags are unique, have a maximum of 160 characters and include your target keyword

4. All pages have H1 and (optional) H2 tags

5. All your images have SEO friendly names, use keywords and have alt tags

6. Create your sitemap.xml

7. robots.txt are found

8. Get rid of inline css and javascripts

9. Make sure you have added your domain to Google Webmaster Tools (and Bing Webmaster tools) and check for 404/500 errors, duplicate content, 301/302 redirect (you can use screamingfrog for this)

10. Install Google Analytics

11. Submit your site to DMOZ

12. Make sure your website is mobile friendly

13. Buy and install an SSL certificate if you don't have one

14. Make sure your site loads fast

15. Create your Social Media profiles (G+, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.)

This is some basic stuff but hopefully will help someone that is starting and is on the way of building their online business.

Most important factors these days in case of SEO

    1. CONTENT - must be written for people not for bot, 100% unique and valuable

    2. Think about building a blog fully integrated with your website and post new articles couple of times /month (at minimum) and remember about point1.

    3. RWD is MUST HAVE

    4. Website SPEED - if your website is for wide audience use CDN to speed up them it may increase the speed a lot. Think about SSD hosting (VPS)

By blogging you will bring niche traffic to your website without any backlinks after some time. Off-page SEO is something you should be very carefull with, quality matters these days , not quantity.

Do you really need an ssl certificate? Will it make your site rank better?

Yep, Google has confirmed that they index SSL certificates and that they use HTTPS as a ranking signal.

This days an ssl is so cheap i really don't see the point in not buying one.

Where can I read about this more? IS there a real difference in ranks if two websites in similar keywords and backlinks, but only one with SSL?

I haven't found any serious split test which would clearly show that site on which a SSL certificate is installed will rank better in google. Would be interested to read this, too.
