How to find the right SEO consultant?

Hi again,

like I just mentioned in another topic I am a independent Yoga teacher based in Germany. The Yoga programs I teach are workshop based, i.e. people come for 2 days, learn a sequence and take it back home.

I want to come up with a long term strategy that will enable me to rank #1-3 on Google for Yoga in various major cities in Germany.

Since I want to focus all my time on creating content for my new Youtube channel, blog, etc. I am looking into the possibility of collaborating with a SEO specialist who could help me to rank high.

Could you give me some advise on how to go about finding the right partner? Also my budget is constrained right now, so I need to figure out a "good" deal.

I was thinking about hiring somebody on upwork.

Would you rather work with someone on an hourly basis or do you think it would be better to agree to a fixed honorary which is contingent on the delivery of the agreed result (e.g. rank #1-3 on Google for keyword xyz)?

Any input is much appreciated!
Fabian

As a freelance consultant myself, I'll give you my 2 cents on the information you've given.

You say your goal is to rank 1-3 on Google for certain keywords. Is this for general business exposure or to gain leads/get people to actually come along to your yoga classes?

I ask this because your workshop will be set in a certain location in which local SEO would be highly beneficial over simply higher rankings for locations all over Germany. A lot of people say "I want to rank high on Google" but you should really think about why. What are your true business goals?
Anything that is done digitally should align with those goals, it also helps to map out much more effective on-going strategies.

In terms of payment, it depends on what both you and the freelancer prefer and agree on. You will see some freelancers that require hourly rate as mandatory and others are more flexible, eg. payment for certain 'services' once complete. It gets tricky with SEO because sure there are step by step processes in optimisation, but it a tortoise vs. hare story. (SEO being the tortoise, paid advertising such as FB Ads and PPC ads being the hare.)

Other things come into play as well, such as the design of your website. Someone can rank you on Google as you wish, but your website may not be designed appropriately, which will equal high bounce rate and low conversions. There are so many things that come into account for a job like this, picture many little cogs working together to make the entire clock tick.

Don't get me wrong, if your goal is simply have more people sign up to your workshop, exposure, or whatever else - it's entirely possible and doable!

With a constrained budget your consultant should be able to talk with you about the available options for the budget - and you both and discuss and perform those that are the priority and most beneficial for your business goals.

Hi, I highly appreciate your input!

I am not sure what you mean with the last sentence above? Maybe I didn't make it clear before what my goal was. I want to rank on #1-3 in those cities in which I offer regular workshops (for example Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin, Hamburg). The ultimate goal then is of course to gain leads and convert those into clients. I don't want to rank in cities in which I don't offer workshops. So in that example I would like to rank for "Yoga Munich", "Yoga Frankfurt", etc.

Could you maybe give me a rough range of what I would have to expect to pay an SEO consultant for various services?

      Thanks a lot!

Of course, you're welcome. That's much clearer. Local SEO and a nice user-friendly website funnel could do great things for you. Also Facebook, but I digress..

Hey FabYoga, I'm really sorry that I can't give you rough prices as I would only be speaking for my own services. But what I can give you is advice to search places such as Upwork, Freelancer.com and PeoplePerHour, (of course PPH is hourly rate) but consultants on Upwork and Freelancer will give you project price estimates if you ask! You can also see a general range of prices once logging in to browse, they're very transparent platforms. There's no harm in reaching out to more than one person either to keep your options open. Advice I would give is ask for examples of previous work and always check their reviews/ratings.
