How much should you pay for professional backlink building?

Hello. I just finished building a WordPress site in the post-secondary education niche and my website includes a directory of schools in each state (pertaining to my niche) plus 53 high quality articles of at least 1,000 words in each article. I've done my on-page SEO using the Yoast plugin and I have submitted my site index to Google and most of my webpages are already indexed. Many of my articles are already ranking on pages 4 thru 6 with no backlinks yet. Many of the high volume search terms (30,000 to 135,000 monthly) I am targeting in my niche have low to medium competition according to MOZ.

My question is, how much should I pay per month for professional backlink building done by an SEO company (with all the backlink building done "in-house")? I've just started researching different companies and the first company I talked to charges by hours of work done per month with a minimum charge of $1,700 per month (for 20 hours of backlink building which according to them equals 4 quality in-content niche-relevant links per month on pages with PA of 30 and up). Is this the average price for a low to medium competitive niche? I can't afford $1,700 per month since I am living off of my one website right now, which only brings in an average of $2,000 per month!

Can someone tell me what the fair price for professional link building should be, BASED ON THEIR OWN EXPERIENCE?

Also, can anyone recommend a professional link building service or SEO marketing company that charges less than $1,700 per month for quality backlinks and/or SEO marketing?

Woah!! What a rip. 4 links per month....LOL.... so like $400 plus per month per link. Thats crazy

For a new app we have been getting ready to launch we have been working with a bunch of SEOs. They average around $600/month per client but if you just look at the corporate type they go over a thousand to a couple thousand

HOWEVER if we are talking low competition it can go lower than that. It really all depends on what level of risk you wish to take (I would suggest on a site making you a steady $2,000 you not risk too much. Look for an organic link builder not a link spam artist (lots of them around here). they could just end up messing up your business because you still CAN get a manual penalty on your site.

Also you should only deal with SEOs willing to give you some kind of guarantee - not guaranteed ranking but an insurance that the work is done right. The industry for too long has just said - no guarantee for anything and thats wrong.

It sounds like you're doing your research, but definitely keep your guard up. There are a lot of crap companies out there who will make huge promises.

As an aside, if it's relevant to your site, you might look into ways to try and get press / publicity / guest contributions. When you can swing pieces that get picked up by the AP, you'll get bombarded with quality links from the sites they distribute to.

I don't think you should hire a SEO company and I mean a legit one, because they cost a lot. I would try to find a VA who has worked doing SEO before or learn it yourself, it's not hard.

I wouldn't hire an seo service yet. I might not hire one at all. Google makes too many changes that could adversely affect your site and your income at anytime.

I would focus on more direct marketing. Build profitable funnels. When you're turning a profit, use some of that money for SEO on your money making pages, if you wish.

I also wouldn't hire a surgeon to perform that surgery. They are too expensive. Just hire a med student or learn how to do it yourself.

If you hire a worthwhile SEO company, algorithm changes are not going to impact your rankings to any significant negative degree. A large part of the changes that Google implements is to target spam and low quality link builders.

Most of the other changes they make are centered around understanding content better and understanding link value better.

All true, but at the end of the day, you still have better control on your sales and business with direct marketing. And, in my opinion, you should at least be testing your site/pages before heavily investing in SEO.

Well yes sure. I always advise doing an AdWords campaign first. No sense in spending 6 months to rank a page only to find out that it will not convert the way you thought it would.

Direct marketing is fast but I don't know that it always gives you better control becausr in the case of adwords the same company can be quite arbitrary.

Also lets not leave out that it can burn a whole in your pocket faster than reasonable SEO. Wha the OP listed wasn't reasonable

I'd agree with you and Mike on testing with adwords but only in certain cases - not the universal truth you both are asserting.

Existing businesses already know what they are offering and selling. Most of SEO is linkbuilding. If a page is not converting theres no way it can't be tweaked and retain rank.

For companies and websites that know they are not changing product serice or what they are about AND know they will not be wanting to pay for every click they can and should think both out the gate.

If its affiliate marketing then I can see adwords always first - not all sites or businesses.

After doing the link building (and monitoring/maintenance) thing for all of my own sites + clients for the past 20 years, it took me a loooong time to finally figure out how to off-load that task when I decided to retire from providing direct web services.

Backlink management is an ongoing effort and requires a plan like everything else. You need a monthly plan and a 1-year and 3-year objective for consistent and quality link growth.

Unfortunately, a lot of chatter you hear about links is just not true. For example, everyone (including Matt Cutts himself) will tell you to never buy a link on a directory site or the Google gods will thrash you. Well, tell that to the millions of law firms who spend $20,000 "monthly" (yes, I've worked with law firms and know their budgets intimately) just for paying annually for legal directories for links. Law firm sites don't get banned for buying links. But, some little guy opening a plumbing company in remote Idaho might if he doesn't take the right steps. You and your link builder need to know why one place can get banned and why another will not. Sucky but true.

My point is that whoever you hire needs to have a common belief system that you do about how to approach the link building process properly. For that reason, you have to learn how to do it yourself so that you can accurately hire someone to assist or take over for you and ramp things up in the right sequence. Not easy, but worth it long-term.

Cutts never said anything of the kind....before or after he left google a long time ago....

A law firm that spends 20K a month on backlinks, well, must have fools for clients.

You don't need a single backlink to be found on google as a plumber or lawyer....

A real business might spend 20k on advertising....

What law firm relies on directories?

      Just complete BS.

It's not about the cost of link building alone. You have to keep them. You can by 5 bucks of link building on fiverr is that's really what you want. If you want real links, find a good link broker. I'd actually separate link building from seo.

Hi, Paul. Do you know of any quality link brokers you can recommend? Or were you being sarcastic about the link broker statement?

What would you say is a reasonable price for 1 in-content backlink on a high quality website ( a website with medium DA, high quality content that pertains to my niche, get's a good amount of traffic, etc.)?

Do NOT buy on the basis of DA. I know lots of sellers are using this because Moz etrics are easier to get for free but Moz is the worst in weeding out spam from their algo.

for your sites income unless it has increased I would not go above $100 (Edit: guess it could have since its been over a year since this thread was started) . Frankly I think you would do better with webmaster outreach but that takes a little time and some experience doing it. Quite often there is some payment but if done correctly not as much as jsut buying a link outright.

Thank you for the replies. I found one SEO company in NJ that charges $599/month all the way up to $7400 per month. Can you guys look at their features chart and tell me if you think the $599 per month is a fair price for what they offer? Their features and pricing chart is at 4pointdigital.com/seo-packages/.

Looking at their chart, I can't really tell if they do link building or not.

See SEOGhost? I knew it wouldn't take long for someone to raise an opposite claim. Been that way for years. That's how SEO has always been. That's why it's so challenging to choose a good SEO provider these days. paulgl could be entirely correct with his statement...in "his" experience. In "my" experience, I've found his statement to not work for me (or when I used to do this work for clients).

I used to enjoy jousting with people about b.s. versus truth in the SEO realm but came to the realization that, in many cases, there is no right or wrong. Every webmaster must experiment and determine what brings higher SERPs for himself or herself because the winning combination of on-page, quality content, links, video, shares, yada, yada, yada, is not always the same for every website for every industry.

Then and only then will you be able to find an adequate SEO vendor...one that is aligned with your own experience of what works for "your particular websites."

First of all, the only way to learn what's what is to see what companies are doing for yourself. SEO is not a black magic science, it's really not. You can take a look at what successful companies are doing, chart trends, and replicate what they're doing.

    - Where are the successful companies building their links? If you look at what many successful companies are doing, do you see trends? (And trends in non-successful companies). Lot of blacklink tools available to just see what the successful companies (in high competition searches) are doing vs taking some yo-yos word for it

    - In general, where can you find successful companies around the internet? (SEO really, is unchanged in the sense that the name of the game is gaining the greatest footprint/influence would underscores your value/relevance to a real person - which google algo is built to replicate)

    - Are you willing to put in the time/effort for sweat equity/trial error? When I was in SEO (Now own one of the largest lead gen providers for SEO companies), I spend my days in college trial/erroring the crap out of everything, and at one point had the #1 website on Google for "window tinting" ahead of Wikipedia and 3M +ran a virtual monopoly on tons of cities.

You have to throw a lot of crap up against the wall and see what works. Then when you find what works, you replicate what worked + train people to do it for 1/8 of what the SEO companies are charging you.

If you ARE going to go w/ any SEO company, tell them "Show me the money" --- Let them show you backlink portfolios of sites they've worked on -- Or if they won't give that to you, at least get lists of sites they worked on and look them up yourself

Are they getting you links for legit, bona fide resources, blogs/publications (that real people read)? Or are the links from pages that say "Thailand Vacations" and a bunch of paid link cesspools?

Also spy on websites outside your category. Do what your competitors are doing + then do what they're not doing + beat them

You really won't know WTF to do unless/until you get your hands dirty. If it's worth it to you...

Go to BHW and choose one of the best reviewed service: you will find lot cheaper but good.

But choose only the bestreviewed and updated, i mean the owner post frequently and respond to answers.

If you scroll up you will find of course some discount in occasion of special event, like Valentine's day, which lets you spend even less.
