What do I need to know about Googles next algorithm update that is happening in January?

I know this is happening in January and there will be an update to the mobile search algorithm but what else should I know and what can I do to make sure my websites are going to be shined on from the Google gods.

I have heard about penalties for pop-ups and sites that aren't mobile optimised.

Anyone have a bit of a check list of the new criteria so I can make sure my sites have everything working in tip top shape before the January update.

"The line is a bit fuzzy, but interstitials that meet the following criteria may impact the mobile rankings for a page, according to Google’s Webmaster Central Blog.

Showing a pop-up that covers the main content, either immediately after users navigates to a page from the search results, or while they are looking through the page.
Displaying a standalone interstitial that the user has to dismiss before accessing the main content.
Using a layout where the above-the-fold portion of the page appears similar to a standalone interstitial, but the original content has been inlined underneath the fold."

I was only saying yesterday how some marketers underestimate the annoyance that pop up's on entry to a site gives, and are counterproductive and a gate way to more spam. I'm glad this is coming in personally.

I agree. Pop ups are getting out of control and are disrupting user experience.

I welcome this change, anything else I should be aware of with the update?

So it is only for mobile search?

local searches will show results using proximity data. So if you type 'nearest coffee shop', it will use your real time location to return results, rather than show sites optimised for the same area that aren't actually the closest. Also the 5 locations shown on the google maps currently will be reduced to 3 I believe.
