I can see how social media is great for publicity, gaining a following and having an easy line of communication to them but I cant see clearly how it benefits SEO. Could anyone explain this to me?

  • Hi,
You are right that is great for publicity, following & communication but there is also an important factor called social traffic. You must read this article as it clearly explain how social media affects SEO. I found it quite useful.

The interesting thing while analyzing your site SEO is that some online tools ignore your pinterest or youtube account and are marking red the section of social interaction of your site, because they have only facebook and twitter which confirms your social visibility. Not fair I think..

Most of the traffic that comes in a website is from social sites as they are getting aware of your website through the social sites. Promoting on social sites helps to make the products of a business a huge brand. As most of the people are linked with social sites, its the most easiest way to drag the attention of your targeted audience towards your site quickly & easily.

The link of social sites in a website helps the viewers to access your sites easily without any intricacy.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[10935340].message }}
  • The majority of links that are built by SEO companies do not bring traffic to your website.
They are built to pass page rank to your site, which in return helps to increase the authority and power of your site, but as far as a traffic source it doesn’t do much.
Sure, when done correctly in the form of guest blogging it can be a great traffic source.
    Happy working

Considering you're an SEO genius, you should know. Not important because most links from social media, if not all, are nofollows and Google created nofollow links so as to allow people to request that Google does not pass juice or anchor text through such links.

Why do you say that social media is important for SEO?

Shouldn't your question be: Is it important for SEO?

The answer, no. It's important for the other things you said and a few more but no direct bearing on SEO.

Social media is mostly for gaining traffic. If you are in a niche that has a community of websites that share each other's posts on their blogs, you MIGHT get a few links out of it but don't count on it.

Google has said numerous times that it does not use social networks in their rankings. Bing and Yahoo, however, MAY use it as a very small ranking factor but not one thatis going to catapult you more than a spot or two.

Bottom Line: Think of social as a means of getting traffic but don't count on it doing much, if anything, for SEO - at least with Google.

Actually, I need to slightly amend my previous statement about social networks and SEO. IF (and that is a big IF) you can develop a strong following on Google+, things you post that you link to via Google+ have a TREMENDOUS boost in the search rankings for people who follow you if they are signed into Google. I just did a test and a relatively new page that was completely unranked became #2 when signed into Google from an unrelated test account that follows the account I posted from.

So, Google+ CAN actually help you rank better with people who follow you if they are signed into any Google property and if you also link to a page from Google+.

For marketing purposes, establishing a brand and increasing online presence social media is very helpful. Though the use of social media doesn't directly give benefits to SEO especially when it comes to getting a backlink, it can still help generate traffic to the site.

I think when done properly, it serves also as a backlink to your site beside the traffic it can bring. Especially Google +. But it's important to have good content in your social pages. Not just a link back to your articles.

I read recently that someone got a warning from spamming on Google +. And that person was legitimate wondering why Google would send her that without giving her details why. Maybe was she posting too much. All the speculations were there. But no real answers.

Technically, you are right. It is a backlink. It is a nofollow backlink, however, which means it holds no SEO value.

Google rarely gives details about any warnings they send.

I`d say it benefits SEO indirectly. Firstly, Social Media can help you grow the awareness of your business/brand. Secondly, user-engagement is becoming a crucial part of a SEO strategy nowadays. Utilizing the Social Media platforms the right way can bring you lots of benefits, as almost any person is involved in Social Media networks these days.

The best way to approach it would be to start from determining where you target audience is (it`s not necessarily the same major Social Networks for any business). Once you get the idea of the platforms where people talk most on your niche-related topics - that`s where your business/brand should totally be represented.

You can use various strategies next: you can spy on your competitors` most winning content and look for ideas to create your own. You can start building relationships with the influencers in the niche (which may result in productive partnership and benefit SEO directly now). Finally, you can connect with your users - you can be there for a user once he/she comes up with a question or is in need for advice, you can manage your reputation by being the first one to react to a complaint (or find a complaint about your competitor`s service that you can solve). Managed wisely, this can be a really powerful addition to your campaign.

  • I think, Social Media drives REAL traffic to your website – traffic that is high quality! If someone is engaging with your company or brand on social media then there is an obvious connection or interest. These are the type of visitors that eventually turn into customers.

So that, Social Media are most important in SEO field.

So much misinformation in those 3 sentences of yours.

No, social media doesn't drive REAL traffic. Social media drives REAL traffic if you do certain things correctly. And, still, it has nothing to do with SEO.

And people can engage with your company who have no other interest in your company than to see it die.

C'mon, man. Know what you're talking about and be precise. Precision is important. Cross my heart!

Social media is important for SEO for the following reasons...

If someone picks up your link and gives you a relevant backlink.

Also..people are more likely to share a website that has an active social media presence.

Im talking atleast 100k - 1m followers. Not 34 followers that many amateurs talk about when theyre speaking about social media.

However keep in mind i have a friend who makes a unimaginable amount of money and doesn't even know how to spell twitter.

          Yup, that's me.

Yeah, there's a chance someone will "pick up your link" if you do social media... a slim one... So, how does that make social media important?

There's a chance someone will "pick up you link" and so on with everything online. But how is that important to SEO?

What you're saying is a lot like saying, skip college, skip getting a job, play lotto.

And I HAVE told people on this forum many times how I do SEO. Google it.

This topic presents itself often. I believe that both sides of the discussion are correct to a point... or better yet correct in the idea but misguided to the point. There is without question SEO impact from Social sites.

Lets start with Face Book and Twitter... I will ask a pretty simple question.. when was the last time anyone saw a tweet or a Face Book post in a SERP? I cant say that I have. However, I have seen Face Book and Twitter profile pages listed. The fact that THOSE are physically in a SERP is SEO. There is no way around this.. Granted this is more present in say local SEO, the fact remains, Face Book and Twitter profiles pages do exist in SERP pages.

To have the ability to have 3 or 4 listings on page one in the SERPS to be your website a Twitter Profile, a Face Book profile, and say a YouTube video is pretty significant. Granted it has absolutely nothing to do with "Social Signals" or back links, but like I said the fact remains, these elements are players in SEO.

Now lets draw our attention to say You Tube. Again in the no-follow discussion, links from You Tube are in theory no-follow, or are they? I would tell you not all You Tube links are created equal. There is without question the ability to gain follow links from within You Tube.

Lets then take a quick look at G+, as with the others.. on the surface conventional thinking would suggest no-follow. Is that exactly the truth? and I would say no. Add to G+ the other SEO aspects ( the ability to actually getting a page indexed quickly ) and there is without question SEO value to be had here.

What gets interesting is the obvious pattern... there are those owned by Google, and those that are not. Those that ARE a part of Google, can and will effect SEO in ways other than filling a SERP position. Those that are not Google owned.. well they are what they are.

SO why is this? I personally believe the ultimate answer is bandwidth. Not just the bandwidth that Google would required to scan Twitter and Face Book, but the other side of that.. how much would have to be accounted for as the bots go rolling through the millions of posts and tweets daily. Bottom line here.. Bandwidth is money.

Not to long ago many may recall the discussion of Google again having access to Twitter. An agreement was struck and twitter was again added to the mix within Googles results. One of the primary discussions was literally the size of the pipe. How much information Google would have access to, and I think more importantly how much information Google had the ability to consume. Ultimately I think profiles was as far as both sides were willing to go.

    Just kinda my 2 cents

Your point is right by reasoning is not right. Matt Cutts has explained in one of his video that the content is owned by them i.e. fb and twitter. Today they have deal with Twitter so they index it and rank tweets. They don't have access of fb behind the firewall even today. So they can see facebook only like what we can see without logging in. So Matt has said that we can't put efforts on data mining where the data access is not sure. And we can't also take into ranking signal as when data stops, it may screw the result completely. So we consider only those things in ranking which are available for all on internet.

Image result for importance of social media in seo
When it comes down to it, SEO results are responsible for a large percentage of a website's traffic, so you need to use every opportunity available to improve those rankings. Social media is a great way to help enhance your search engine optimization,In SEO, the off-site side of things is (or was) ultimately all about creating content and building links, whereas social is all about engaging with people and building relationships. What many people tend to forget however, is that the latter can often lead to a huge number of natural links being built as well

What is the point of having a website if it's not seen, known about, talked about, and visited? A website should never be an online brochure; it should be dynamic, engaging, and interactive.

There are two types of SEO: (1) on-page SEO, and (2) off-page SEO. I'd say 20% of the work is on-page SEO, which 95% of website developers get wrong. 80% of it is off-page SEO, which many developers have no clue how to do.

It's why many corporations actually are now implementing SEO departments, most often separate from their IT departments. My company, JPW SEO & Net Presence, is really what SEO is all about these days. It's more than just hoping your site ranks well in the SERPS (search engine ranking positions for a key phrase). It's getting your site out there, visited, known, seen, talked about -- having a general overall greater net presence.

Google places a heavy amount of trust with these sites thus giving them a high DA. You can utilize this to power to your sites and eventually build them up and rank the social properties themselves.

The off side of seo contains the things such as: creating content, building links, on the other hand, social allows people to see it, talk about it. Social is all about engaging with people and building relationships. Social media marketing is tightly linked to seo. Because social media profiles rank in search engines.

Consider a scenario where social media does not exist.
Where do you suppose the traffic will come from? business directories or blogs, etc? yes, but that traffic would not have much weightage/importance in google's view. My point being, social media and SEO are an integral part of a Digital Marketing Campaign. Without social platforms or networks seo wouldn't be of any use.

I used to do SEO in those time you speak of, I had objectives and strategies. Quantity of backlinks is still the name of the game, Google just got good at figuring out who's manipulating and who's not, who's got lousy links and who's got good links.

      1. True, but where's the SEO in there?
      2. Nope. Some active social media profiles drive traffic, the quality of the traffic ain't always good.
      3. You sure 'bout that, coz I'm ranking without any of 'em?
      4. Partially true. You get backlinks from people who find your site through social media if your stuff is great. Even then, depending on niche, you can be a far cry from a team... unless you mean a lazy team.
      5. True without being true... The question was Why is social media important to SEO... Your #5 says it replaces SEO, hence, if true, it's not important to SEO.
