Updating Images in Google

For images that are already indexed in Google Image search. Every so often I need to update that image, and would like to see the image updated in search as fast as possible.
So, how do I go about telling Google that this image has been updated. Please change the image being displayed.

A silly example would be I have an image about New Year's Day and it currently has a New Years 2016 Picture, the day 2017 hits I want to use this same file name with a different 2017 image.

Change it and re-submit it for a re-crawl.

Theres a chance the old image will still rank in the serps for some time.

That's not going to happen, instantly updated image on the SERPs. You can update the image but not the SERPs instantly at your convenience.

Build an image xml sitemap, add the xml sitemap to your robots.txt file hosted on your site, then submit the robots.txt file to Google Webmaster Tools. That will get the images automatically indexed/reindexed at Google's convenience.
