I was thinking of include the main keyword in my domain name.

Then I figure maybe I instead would make a brandable domain name and instead create a page with the main keyword.

Or is it more beneficial out of a SEO perspective to have the main keyword directly in the domain name?

Which option has more weight (both with keyword in URL)?

    Keyword in URL is one of the ON page tactics. But don't choose the domain as keyword. Put your keyword on the inner page's URL. Because Google already launched the Exact Match Domain algorithm to affect the websites which are having the domain with keyword.

      Your comments are both ignorant and reek of poor knowledge.

      EMD's and PMD's still work perfectly fine and I have multiple sites with the keyword in the domain which are ranking very well even though it has a significantly lower link profile and DA/PA. And I'm not saying that DA/PA has anything to do with rankings either, I'm using it as an indicator of competition.

      There are even some more blackhat/greyhat niches where an EMD/PMD is essential to outrank the branded competitors.

    Yes, using keywords in the URL is an on page practice. EMD update can effect your website's performance if your keyword is your exact domain. You can use keywords in internal page URL's but it is recommended to use extended version or related long tail keywords.

    From my personal experience, keywords in URL don't have much effect now as Google continuously works on controling spamming and over optimization techniques.

    I don't think that will be beneficial. Because there many subcategories for each keywords. Yes you should optimize your page according to your keywords.

    I think that your keyword include at first of domain. It is best practice in the eye of search engine.

    Hi BoJon,

    Keywords in the URL are one of the 4 primary signal groups for Google's search algorithm.

    Whether or not to use your primary keyword within your domain name should be based on a variety of factors.
    • Does it make sense? If your entire website is about a single topic and your keyword term works for a domain name then go for it.
    • How important is your branding? If creating a memorable brand name is more important to your strategy then it may be much better to select a short, easy to spell, and easy to remember name, rather than a generic keyword as a name.
    • What is your marketing strategy? If you are planning for search engine traffic from generic keywords to be you only traffic source then it makes sense to use a generic keyword domain.

    The main benefit of using a keyword domain name is that your primary keyword is always included in every URL, and you will always have the benefit of relevant anchor text used whenever people link to your website using just your URL as the anchor text.

    Obviously, you can make sure your URLs include relevant keywords by paying close attention to your URL link structure, so using a brandable name can be just as effective as a keyword domain if you pay close attention to the details when creating your link architecture.

    So did Google Tweak the EMD Algorithm this year? I know they released it back in 2012. I am still seeing sites do very well with exact match domains, assuming they aren't just relying on the name, but also have good content.

      Hi HangTenSEO,

      Google makes frequent adjustments to their ranking algorithm.

      Using an EMD (Exact Match Domain) used to be a surefire method of getting on 1st page of search results until Google made adjustments. Now, it still helps, but the signal isn't quite as strong as it use to be. They simply changed the weighting of the signal to be a bit less than it used to be.

      It used to be that multi-word EMDs worked well, they still do if users type in the mult-word term without spaces, but as soon as you enter spaces a significant portion of the signal strength is dissipated.

    It is easy to rank a website with a particular keyword

    There is a Google algorithm update for this with the name Exact-Match Domain (EMD) Update which was announced by Google in September 2012.
    According to this Google algorithm update, if you are using your target keyword in your domain name, it can optimize your website in Google SERPs for the keyword very easily and quickly. But there are risks too. You have to worry only in the case if you are not following the Google Search engine guidelines. The Google search engine guidelines states that you should not include the keyword in your website content too many times in unnatural way. But if you are using the keyword in your webpage too many times in a natural way, the risk of your website to be penalized by Google is still there. There is a solution to this issue in SEO, and it is LSI Keywords.
    You are suggested to use LSI keywords instead of repeating the same keyword(s) many times in your content. Latent semantic indexing keywords (or LSI keywords) are nothing but SEO terms for related keywords or synonyms. You need to add the synonymous words of your keywords in-spite of repeating the keywords with a density of 1% or 2%. This is because, Google has updated its search engine algorithm and it prefers 'Latent Semantic Indexing' keywords or better famous as the term LSI keywords.

    I`d go with using the brand name for domain name (especially if it`s memorable and unique) and adding keywords in URLs - just make sure the URLs will semantically make sense, will be descriptive enough and relevant to actual content of pages.

    Although not mandatory it is advised to have the keyword in the url and title of the webpage (Importance of meta keywords has decreased significantly so they almost don't matter as much).
