Ranked no 2 in google but no traffic!?

Hi I used to affiliate to ipods on amazon but no longer do. Anyway i noticed recently that one of my keywords was ranked no 2 in the google search engine and this keyword gets an average of 165,000 searches in google a month according to the google adwords keyword tool!

However surprisingly I have been getting about 5 people a day reaching my site from google - not much!

Now i know that there are many things that can cause people to click upon your result or not in google but that seems like an awefully low click through rate!

You would think that I would at least get about 10,000 clicks a month being in the second position for this regardless of anything else that comprises my listing. E.G. Regardless of the fact that I am listed under the main 'apple' website that sells ipods, regardless of the fact that my meta tag description may not sell it sufficiently and regardless of the fact that the keyword may not be the most 'buyer' keyword in the world.

Anyone know why this may be?

Well - Look. Google SOMETIMES, not always, can be PERSONALIZED. Which means that you are either signed in to your Google account, and then once you type in that search term - you are on #2 place - but in reality (across the world) you are actually ranked #64 or whatever.

The only reason you are #2 is because you are using your own computer. Try checking it out on someone elses computer. That might be the issue. If it's not that, I don't know. But take one more thing into consideration.

All those tools, wordtracker, market samurai etc. are more or less inaccurate. For example, I'm ranked #1 for a competitive keyword and I "should" be getting like 4000 visitors a day - and I am REALLY #1, everywhere. But I'm not getting the traffic I supposedly should have been getting. It's still good, but not THAT high.

On the other hand there is a special "tiny" but important factor. People in France, or Germany or whatever... when they type Google into their internet explorer or firefox or whatever. What happens?

They DON'T land on google.com - they land on google.de, or google.fr or google.au or google.ca (canada I guess). And then - you might not be #2. Maybe you're #2 for google.com - but you're not #2 for some other country - where more people are searching for your keyword than in the states.

    My 2 cents.
    Good luck anyway,
    Jack

Try this Google dance tool to find out whether you are in that position in Google main databases:

I doubt you're number 2 with that many searches and so little traffic. Even with the crappiest title and description ever written I'd say you'd be getting a lot more traffic.

It depends if it is google.com (worldwide) or google.com.pk (Google Pakistan) or Google (Google India) or Google Canada or Google UK or whatever. Also it is true that when you search from you own computer you see your site ranked high but actually it's not.

I dont agree with you here. This is simply a myth that when you search from your computer you will rank high but from outside it will rank low. Google search fetches results from its many servers and the results are constant from any system.

Also just sign out of gmail or what ever else google account of yours you are in then search.

Also, are your key words searched that much?

I have a blog #2 or #3 on Google for which I would think would be a popular search term, The fact is it's not.

    Hey int-mark,

There could be several things causing this to happen.

Like Jack says, it is possible that the big G is "personalizing" your search...they have been known to do that. So before you do the next search, in addition to making sure you're not logged into any Google account, Clear ALL your cookies from your browser and P.C. (I use ccleaner to do this). I have had it happen that I wasn't signed in, but my results were still customized!

The other thing, you might want to do a search using an IP changer or proxy so you can see where you rank on some of their other server farms, not just the one your ISP sends you to.

    Good luck!

Using the Adwords Tool for SEO traffic estimates can be a little confusing.

Yes. I also agree with the previous replies. Do check in Google while you've been logged out from your Gmail account and also check ranking in google.com
