Choose a different domain or different extension when url is taken

There is a domain that I really really want. The .com is taken (by someone who doesn't seem to be using it), and I have tried to contact them with no success. It doesn't expire until the end of this year.

I have two options:

(1) Think of a completely different domain.
(2) Just settle for the .co.uk domain. The website is for a service that will solely be in the UK.

My question is whether it is damaging for a .com website to exist for your domain. People will sometimes go there and then think that your website (which is actually .co.uk) is down or broken. I really want this domain as it is perfect for my brand but think perhaps I should try a different one.

Thanks in advance!

You can go for .org or .net when .com is not available. If the service is solely for UK services then .co.uk will also be a good option.

If the service is going to be solely for the UK, then going for .co.uk won't be a problem at all. You don't necessarily have to have a .com to be a "proper brand".

If you were to operate your service globally or for example, for the US, then obviously .co.uk domain wouldn't work, but I can't see any reason why it won't be ideal for the UK market.
