    Unless you are entering a really specific niche, I wouldn't bother.

    If you are building a general gaming site like GameSpot or IGN, you are probably wasting your time trying to do SEO. You are not going to beat them unless you have really deep pockets and a lot of time.

    Now if you are targeting one specific game or genre, you might have a shot, but you are probably still going to have to spend some decent amount of money and time if it is a popular one.

    You are far better off trying to generate traffic through social media and advertising.

    It does not matter what niche you are entering - nothing changes. You need to find keyword phrases with low competition where you stand a chance of ranking or, as Mike suggests, chop the niche down quite a bit into a micro niche that has little competition. Then, it's SEO as usual - on page and backlinks.
