Breadcrumbs and interlinking

Hi guys,

I'm running the Genesis Framework and have enabled breadcrumbs on my pages. I want to make sure I'm interlinking my posts to create link juice within the site. Does google use the breadcrumbs for interlinking or are they more for user experience. Or should I put tags in the headers to interlink the pages? Sorry if this is a newbie question, I've tried researching this first, but didn't find much into this.

  • Neither.

You should be linking to other blog posts on your own site from within content of blog posts.

    • When I do this, should I be looking for high authority blog sites from within my niche?

  • Breadcrumbs and interlinking are two different things. Breadcrumbs are used for navigation purpose only while the latter helps us to interlink different posts together to make a silo structure and pass link juice properly.

    Yes Google uses breadcrumbs.

Easy to prove considering the same breadcrumbs are on the SERPs between the title and description.

    • On some of the websites that rank on the first page in google in my niche I notice they use anchor text(very small in the header) of their blog title article to interlink their blog posts back to the homepage. Its usually small anchor text in the upper right or left corner. So, even if I'm using breadcrumbs, should I still be doing this?
  • Breadcrumbs works for both, i.e. to enhance user experience as well as to make it easy for crawlers to find and drill down to the important contents. It works in a patronized way (themes or plugins can handle it ) and for interlinking you manually choose what or where to link.
