SEO - My Site is dropping, might this be the reason?

Hello,

My site is dropping on the SERP, and I was wondering if it could be because of the following:

I am updating my website and I have a xxxx.testing-domain-live.com, where I test my updates.

Is it possible that Google is picking up both my sites and detecting duplicated content? Which would explain my position dropping? or is this not related and my site is dropping for other reasons?

Many Thanks to all!
Marc.

Password protect the domain in your hosting panel to prevent Google from seeing anything you're testing.

This way Google (or anyone else) never sees your testing server, except you.

If you have a static IP, you can also add that to your .htaccess file so that rather than a password box appear, any other IP gets a server error as if nothing exists on the domain.

How long has been the new test domain active? If its for a long time then it could be possible since duplicate contents will create issue for rankings.

You can also set that subdoamin to noindex for future works.

Unlikely, but have you blocked the search engines from your subdomain? if not then do it as you are basically publishing stacks of duplicate content

No. Duplicate content would not drop your rankings.

The only thing that duplicate content on different sites can do is cause one version to be sent to the supplemental SERPs while the other version shows in the live SERPs. It doesn't cause drops in the rankings.

Add meta noindex on your test website. Check with a fragment of text between quotes, to see if both versions are indexed.

Do you have any competitors who could be doing negative SEO on your site??

Well, if your xxxx.testing-domain-live.com is not exactly mirroring your main domain and the content is not being published the same second as on your website then it is hardly possible that it can effect your rankings dropping. As far as we know there are tons of reasons for the rankings to drop, so it is better to look somewhere else.

Guys thanks a lot for the answers. We have deleted the testing domain since we have finished updating the main site. We are still checking what could be influencing our SERP position, but it appears that, whatever it was, our SERP position is improving again.

    Many Thanks!
