Backlinks to homepage or category page conundrum

I'm trying to improve the position of a search term that currently ranks #14 in Google for the homepage of an eCommerce website.

The website is in the home improvement market and I have a small budget to promote it on websites and blogs in this area. The actual keyword I'm targeting has a specific product category page within the website and it would make sense to direct visitors to this page. However, as it is the homepage that currently ranks for this term, can anyone shed some light on whether I should be building links to the homepage or to the category page? Will links to the category page still boost the homepage for this term?

I will try to obtain links to both pages, if/where possible. But if I can only pick one or the other, which should I choose?

Example:
www.bathroomsupplies.com

Homepage ranks #14 for "bath taps" but there is a category page /bath-taps that directing visitors to would be more appropriate. However, I'd obviously like the site on page 1 as soon as possible.

Many thanks

You need to place a keyword anchor-text followed link on the Home page pointing at the internal category page. Push the authority through the Home page to the internal page.

That's how you switch which page gets ranked on Google SERPs for your target keyword.

As far as new followed backlinks, point some at the internal page to get it over the hump (page #1 of the SERPs).

Very Interesting Topic, I think both are valuable, It's depends on you. But Category wise is potential.

There is already about 3 anchor text links to this page on the homepage. It's an important product category of the site. However, this page does not currently rank anywhere for this term.

I suggest you to build backlinks and do OFF page strategies to your category page instead of home page for the keyword "bath taps". Because your category page only contains relevant meta tags, relevant content, relevant heading tags and relevant image which is similar to the products. So, your product page could easily crawl by the Google and improve the ranking on Search Engine Result Page.

You can do the SEO and link building stuffs to the common keywords and branded keywords to your home page. But you have to work for the product keywords to improve the ranking for the category or product pages on Google.
