My bounce rate is 80%-90%, but I have good content. Do I make design mistakes? (screenshots)

Just to be sure, are you defining bounce rate as the number of people who come to your site, visit one page and then leave?

If so, 80-90% is not uncommon. Especially if you are a niche site which covers just one content vertical.

Generally day to day news sites get returning visitors who come back for general daily news (e.g. business, sports, local news etc) tend to have lower bounce rates - otherwise 80% is not all that bad.

It looks like your site is Dutch, so I'm not sure if there are language nuances, but the design looks fine to an English speaker like me.

Are you worried about the affect your bounce rate is having on your advertising yield (i.e. how much you are earning)? The other metric to check, is time on site. If that's also low along with bounce rate, then you may have a problem.

Yes, people who leave after one page is what I considered bounce rates.

I also checked 'time on site'. Seems normal, but I will research what is normal. Thank you so much!

Bounce rate by itself does not tell you much.

Are most of the bounces on a specific page? What are the traffic sources contributing to bounces?

It is possible that it is nothing to worry about.

For example, one of your pages might be ranking for a high traffic, but irrelevant keyword. That brings a lot of visitors that are not quite finding what they were looking for, so they bounce. That doesn't happen often, but I have seen it happen.

Sometimes it is also bot traffic that GA is not picking up as bot traffic.

I totally agree with you. but at before the last one (11) if a vistor read your posts and open 3 or 4 links his navigator will be full with pop up. bad experience for him.

Dear Leonie,

As you are in initial stage, I will suggest you to put 2-3 maximum ads on website. And as I can see you are having ad in the starting of content with center alignment. That is not good technique. If you want still want to put ads on top position of content then I will recommend you place text ads(300*250) with align right or left not center.

And one more thing you are using your local language in content. May be the reason you are not getting those people who knows your business language. So focus on getting your language interested traffic. And I am sure if you will do these types of changes then surely you will see a drop in your bounce rate. I think website layout is not bad.

Bounce rate that is 80 to 90% is bad performance from the site pages in which mostly built to force the visitors to take action before leaving the site.

Bounce rate will be there, we can only try to reduce it/. 80-90% bounce rate is huge, but I just want to know the time visitors are spending on your website. Are they bouncing back just after coming to your website? Then, it must be the look and feel of the website. But, I personally think your website is pretty attractive.
Maybe your loading time is more, try to reduce that.
A website should be user-friendly. So, even if your navigation tabs are at the left panel, try to mention them at the top also.
If visitors are navigating through your website for a long time and then leaving without being converted, then maybe they are not satisfied with your product or services. Or there is a chance that they will come back.
There may be one more chance that your are targeting the wrong niche.

A lot of people have provided great suggestions here. But before you freak out, consider what type of content you have on your site.

If you can consistently retain users by getting them to read two pages, instead of one, then awesome. But this will only happen once you have lots and lots of content.

Otherwise, people will bounce simply because there's not much to do on your site!

And I disagree that 80% is a bad bounce rate... It all depends.

If people are coming to your site and staying for less than ten seconds, then that would be an indication that something is wrong with the site... E.g. It's too slow, or there's a mismatch between your content and the users expectation, or simply you're getting bot /crawler traffic...

That is just not true at all. Bounce rate is relevant. Sometimes it means there is a problem. Sometimes it doesn't. Maybe I want people to click on an affiliate link or a link to another website where I am trying to drive traffic instead of visiting different pages on my site. Then a high bounce rate is good.

And where the hell did you pull 40% out of anyhow? What is so magical about that number?
