Creating quality content

Today I listened to a 4 hour book about SEO while I worked. I learned a lot about it that I previously didn't know. It talked a lot about providing quality content on your website and then also providing quality content on authority sites for example wordpress or tumblr.

So what I take from this is writing articles or blogs related to your business, posting them to authority sites than then link back to your own webpage, which in return help you get recognition from search engines.

I grasp the idea, but the problem I have is the type of business we run, I find it hard to really come up with anything catchy or informant that I could write about, let alone on a regular basis.

We run a sanitary septic service, I know there are some informative information I could easily write about, but I don't think the outreach is really there, I mean its not exactly something most people want to read about, or are vaguely interested in.

Also, there is only so much content I can create related to the field until I start overlapping into information I have already talked about.

I have tried thinking outside the box, but can't come up with to many ideas, so i'm here to get some advice.

  • Here is the thing about that plan, and it is a common misconception. Posting to Tumblr and Wordpress is not really posting to an authority site. Your post is going on a page with no real authority of its own, and it's on a site where nearly all of the content is user generated with little to no moderation or editorial guidelines.

    In other words, any links you build off that content are really, really weak links.

    Also, despite whatever is said in the book you referenced, you do not need to keep adding content to your own site. Like you said, there is only so much you can write about those topics.

    I have a client that handles hazardous waste disposal across parts of the Northeast U.S., so I know the challenges you feel are in front of you in terms of getting good links. You do have options though to get good links. You might have to be a little more creative for some of them, but there are opportunities. For some good links, you don't even need to really create content.
  • I thought the same thing as Mike when I read the part about posting on WordPress and Tumblr. Those are going to be relatively worthless. That's why I recommended the webinar.

    There ARE related things that you can certainly create content around - tips for maintaining your septic tank, how to clean a well, living off the grid, etc. Do a Google search for "Septic Tank Tips" and check out the types of things being written and also the places that are posting those articles for possible guest posting opportunities. Also be sure to look at the "People also Ask" section for ideas. Do the same for anything related to septic tanks or living off the grid.

    All you have to do is look at major cities where there's going to be tougher same niche competition and browse their backlink profiles to get all the ideas you want for link building.

    So say for example, your septic tank cleaning business is located in Tampa Fl, do a Google search for

    • septic tank cleaning dallas texas
    • septic tank cleaning las vegas
    • septic tank cleaning chicago
    • etc...

    The first screenshot below is a local business. The second screenshot is that same business backlink profile (followed links).

    Look at the URLs on those backlinks, that tells you what type of websites will give you links.

    Example:
    • hxxp://www.fingerlakesproperties.com
    • hxxp://www.discoverourtown.com
    • hxxp://www.realtor.com
    • etc...

    Repeat the backlink profile research until your sick of looking at link ideas. Also notice on the first screenshot I skipped any directory domains and went for small business domains like you would own.













  • Very great information guys, I greatly appreciate it. I think in the box I was listening to, they were basing it off of an example. For example wordpress and tumblr are authority sites to search engines because they have been around for so long and have gained googles trust. It was an example of how you can build back links from a trusted site back to your site to get more recognition from google.

    So essentially I want to look at the back links of septic companys from all over the country and find out what sites they are linked back to. Once I figure that info out how do I get my site linked to them?

    What are you using to see those backlinks?

    We currently pay a company a considerable amount of money to take care of our digital marketing (facebook, website,seo, ect), they have had control over it for a year, and we have not seen really much improvement.
