I'm still in the stages of picking a niche and associated keywords with that niche. I wanted to use the keyword planner and some of the other free tools as well as the trial version of Long Tail Pro to help me narrow things down.

I realize I'll have to spend some money on things like LTP and other tools eventually, for now I'd like to use the keyword planner and ubersuggest, etc to learn how to do basic SEO.

I called Google and asked about depositing 1.00 into an adsense fund so it would open up the account and I could see more detailed information in the keyword planner. I also asked about blocking the funds so I wouldn't be clickbombed while I was doing research and figuring this out.

He basically stated that
1) There wasn't anyway of doing that. Once the site is live, if a link gets clicked my funds will get extracted.
2) The only way I could research a niche was to build out a site, put a PPC link on that site, and then the planner would suggest keywords. I asked about researching a different niche while that site was live, and he stated I would have to build out another site, add another link and risk getting click bombed.

Im not worried about the dollar but he's either trying to steer me into an adwords campaign (if I do any PPC in the learning stages it seems Bing would be a better bang for my buck), or he's mistaken. Or as a noob I'm misunderstanding him.

Instead of calling back and getting a second opinion how do you guys keep a dollar in that fund so you can use the keyword planner?

I already have the domain, I haven't put any content on it (yet). I think this is known as a parked page?

I will throw up a quick WP site with minimum content on it just to get the ball rolling if need be. My two niches are unrelated, one is in the local home services market ( think this is called a geo domain?) and the other is a more competitive, statewide campaign for attorneys.

I'm going to try the lead gen route with both of these.
I already own keyword rich domains even though the consensus seems to be this isn't as relevant for 2017 SEO.

The keyword planner only asks for one domain when you fill out the adsense form and if I were to use the lawyer site the CPC is one of the highest keywords.

Is it possible that my site gets clicked, the dollar is gone and when I'm in the negative I would then owe Google money? LIke a checking overdraft? Dumb question, I know, but by the time I got off the phone with him it seemed to create more questions than answering the original one

    Are you people for real?

This is a friggin first...and man there have been many.

Most people decide what to build a site on first....

You can make money with any niche...and I mean any.

You do not need any planner.....that is just lame-O.

What happened to building a site on what you actually know and do?

Grandma crochets dog hankies....she starts a blog...and makes hundreds a month.

Joe Blow thinks he's a lawyer...so he builds a site on lawyering.....makes squat...and swears he should make a million because lawyer keywords pay BIG TIME BABY!

The internet is full of junk pages with junk crapola...if you are not a lawyer or a law firm.....fight the urge to play one on the internet. Or a dentist, plastic surgeon, banker, loan arranger, car dealer,....

Google has a way for you to limit the amount you're willing to spend per day. Make that amount lower than the lowest click cost and you'll get no clicks.... You can put it low, pennies per day.

I'll address the two points you were trying to make or ask about:

    1) Will depositing a dollar and not spending it make it possible to see detailed search numbers? The answer is HIGHLY UNLIKELY (which is the nice way of saying "absolutely no"). As Google states, "Advertisers with lower monthly spend may see a limited data view in the Keyword Planner." Not only are you trying to get detailed numbers with a whopping $1 deposit (I think that would qualify as "lower monthly spend") but you are trying to do it in a way so that you don't actually have to spend that one whole dollar (I'm very sure that not actually spending money qualifies as "lower monthly spend"). Google never defines what would not be a lower monthly spend, but I assure you, it is more than a dollar and certainly more than zero dollars!

    2) Will you be able to see real search numbers for a second website idea once you have an active campaign with one website (that is not a "lower monthly spend" website)? Absolutely! You can use the keyword planner all you want (with some exceptions for automated bot queries) for whatever you want once you are spending a decent amount of money on Google advertising - for one, two, ten or 100 sites.
