SEO question related to web hosting service

by Justin Lackey 4 replies
Hi all, new here. I'm just starting to get into marketing/advertising/digital marketing. But I really like it, and I want to learn as much as I possibly can.

I have a question in regards to web hosting services, and search engine optimization. I have decided that I will be going with host gator for my host. But I am aware of the fact that not everything always stays the same, and in the past there have been hosting services that have gone downhill. That may or may not ever happen to host gator, but I don't want to be locked in with them because I already paid, in the event that their service ever does suffer.

That out of the way, my real question involves SEO. In my research, I came across an article that said that google likes to see that you have bought a lot of time from your site hosting service. So for example, google would really like to see that I had bought 3 years from host gator. Somehow, they can see that. (is this even true? can they see how long you've paid for?) But the disadvantage to buying 3 years worth of time from your host would be that if their service ever does suffer, you're pretty much out of luck. Right? Or wrong?

And if you go month to month, your SEO will likely suffer, because google doesn't view you as someone who is "in it for the long haul". So is any of this true? Or was that article full of beans? If its true, what is the answer to this problem? How can this issue be solved so that your SEO doesn't suffer, but you don't have to be stuck with a host in the event that the host's service takes a turn for the worse?

I've seen these same claims and they simply are not true. We renew our domain names year to year and have never suffered because of it. We pay month to month on the hosting plans.

How does Google know how many years of hosting I bought? They hack into my account?

Thanks for the replies. Wasn't sure if it was just information supplied somewhere, that they took advantage of.

Good to know its not true though. I'll just go month to month then.
