Hey guys - just a question to the ahrefs Specialists.

I have a website and checked this with my competitor website. We are in the same niche and he has a really better ranking then i do. He is in the Top 10 - i am around 24 now.

But look on the picture from Ahrefs - he hasnt got more dofollow backlinks - he mostly has nofollow links. Do you understand why he has a better ranking here? Okay the Domain Value is better - but why?

On the left side is my website - and on the right is his site

Thanks for any help

    Two things.

    1) The number of followed links is not a ranking factor. It is the quality of those links.

    2) Ahrefs does not find every link out there. There are likely a lot more links than what you see in Ahrefs. Ahrefs is just a guide, not a complete picture of what Google sees.

Yeah thanks of course - but in my experience ahrefs finds the most backlinks from every source...more than majestic and so on.

But is there a way you work maybe? Get Backlinks from Pages with high DR for example?

Yes, in tests Ahrefs generally finds the most, but that still might only be half of the links that Google is aware of.

Here's my point. There is nothing really there in the image that tells you why your competitor is beating you.

DR is not a ranking factor. It is just a educated guess about the link quality by Ahrefs.

Nothing in your images tells us what pages any of those links point at, what kind of links they are, anything about the anchor text, or anything about the internal link structure of the two sites you are comparing.

They might be beating you solely based on having a page that is better optimized on site and has a more intelligent internal link structure supporting it. Ahrefs won't identify that.

Your image doesn't tell us a single thing that's useful.

It's possible a single followed backlink could beat out your entire link profile.

It could also be that your link profile is spammy and the reason you're at position 24.

We don't know without seeing the domains/URLs.

Thanks alot for your help guys - im just learning and learning.

The most problem is what i think - you need to check your competition and you can maybe build up the same link profile or you can try to get other links then your competitors.

But if you have a situation like this - would you try to get more links? Or would you say 30 lower links could not beat for example 1 strong link?

For example 1 strong link from an authority site like forbes could kill 40 links blog commenting or forum links for example?

You can't generalize links because all links are unique.

Just because a link is on Forbes doesn't mean it's a strong link. It could be a backlink page with no supporting link profile.

Forum links tend to be nofollow but you still have to check and make sure. You also have to look at the supporting links (If it's a followed backlink page/link).

      Ignore nofollow links for SEO.

The link doesn't even have to be strong to beat most blog comment or forum links. Those are generally pretty far down on the quality scale.
