I'm a total noob @ SEO.

From what I gauge and - correct me if I'm wrong - Google Keyword Planner sucks...

Because it isn't specific (anymore?).

What do you pros out there use for Keyword Planning? Any free options that actually work?

(side question: what's the ideal amount of searches for 'niche' when targeting organic traffic? 1k - 10k?)

There is no ideal search volume. Anyone that tells you that one exists is not someone I would listen to anymore.

It entirely depends on what you are selling. If I am selling something that makes me a $10,000 profit with each sale, I'll target keywords with as little as 10 searches per month.

On the other hand, if I only make $1 per sale, I'm not going to put much focus into lower volume search terms.

I just ask myself two questions:

Could that search phrase bring me potential buyers?
Can I make a profit off of that traffic?

If the answers are yes, it is a viable keyword.

That's a really great way of putting it. Never thought about it like that.

So if you're selling a fairly low-ticket item, logically speaking, you'd eventually have some traffic trickle down to your page and convert.

Even if you're not ranking super well for the keyword (because there's so many searches for it so probably high amounts competition).

Am I roughly on the right track?
