How to Rank My Site Better in Google - E Commerce Website

I work for a company that has a couple of websites. Originally they had one "manufacturing info" website and one website made to sell the products. Over the years, both websites have became a clone of each other. Both websites sell the exact same products, look the exact same way and have the exact same product description and wording on all pages.

I read duplicate content is bad. However I also read that google can not pin-point where the original content came from so it is hard for them to just rank one site poorly because of duplicate content in fear it could be the original site.

Currently our original product site ranks better in Google. However, we are using the "manufacturer info" website as our "brand" now days. I want it to rank organically. Currently we get 90% of our traffic from Adwords spend. I would like to change this. Neither one of our websites are ranking as well as the competition lately.

We are well known in the industry but yet we rank the worst in Google.

What should I do to improve the ranking? Each product has around 100 words for a description. We have a site index. The domain is not new and has been around for 7 years.

Google never said anything of the kind about duplicate content. People repeat junk they heard from a guy who knew a guy who did seo in india.

You claim your site is well known, and you get traffic from adwords.

    What's the problem?

    Advertise is other places.

FYI: Organic traffic can be useless.

Hence, you have companies (that rank #1 for anything and everything) advertising on TV.

If you were disappointed in your results today, lower your standards tomorrow.

My advice is shutdown one of the two sites and redirect the closed site pages to the one site you would like to rank on Google SERPs. Keep in mind you'll have to own the closed domain for eternity (redirects) so don't let any of the domains drop.

Duplicate on it's own isn't a problem but in this case you're working against yourself and confusing all of your traffic and Google bots.

How are we working against ourselves? My Employer thinks having two sites up gets us twice the spots in google and since the one site ranks better than the other its best to keep them both up. They are completely clones though down to all the wording and even the website template. The prices are the same and so are the products.

Is this really not the case? I need a clear case to present to him should we need to shut down the one website.

When Google finds 2 pages with the same content, it decides one is the the original and shows it, the other one goes into the supplemental index (i.e., it does not get shown.)

Depending on existing backlinks, the page that went to the supplemental index can get direct visitors.

Worst case scenario for you, Google decides which of the two is the original and shows only that one. Since they're identical, where's the loss (except in direct traffic). (You can go to analytics and see which of the two versions of a page gets the most organic or direct traffic as a landing page, so as to be able to decide what to do. If they both get a bunch, leave things as they are, if one gets all the traffic and one gets none, hide the one that gets none from Google).
