Which is the best Practice to Fix 404 pages ?

I'm working on 10 client websites each website have 30-40 404 pages, anyone please tell me how to fix them. I read Moz blog about fixing 404 pages and they write too many 301 redirection loose page authority.

    The best practices to fix 404 error is to redirect it to its relevent page. Don't redirect to page that is not relevent or similar to previous one.

    You can design a custom 404 page or just implement on 301 redirection.

    First of all check whether the 404 pages are getting traffic. If yes, then redirect them permanently to active pages.
    The other thing you can do is to redirect all 404 pages to the home page of the website.

    Whoever wrote that either had no idea what they were talking about or you misunderstood what they were talking about.

    The proper thing to do is to determine why the 404's are happening.

    Are there bad internal links on the site pointing to the 404's? If yes, then point those links to the correct spots or remove them.

    Are the 404's happening because old pages that did exist are no longer a part of the site? Then 301 redirect the pages to a related page or just let the 404's happen and make sure there is a good custom 404 page.

    Is something else causing the 404's? Then fix it.
