GMB Service Area vs Physical Location - SEO and local pack ranking effect

Hi all,

I'm new to the Warrior Forum, but not new the world of digital. I helped build an online consumables supply store that started from a single office, and now has three factories and generates 7 figures a year. I then branched out and started my own niche site which has generated close to $300k over the last three years.

I also work for a company that builds campaign assets for advertising agencies (websites, apps etc), so am constantly working on different platforms and industries.

I'm hoping that I can bring some of my knowledge and experience to Warrior and help others.

Now that the intro and background is out of the way, I have a question about local SEO as this is something I've not had much experience with. I've recently moved from Australia to a small town in the USA with my wife. In the process of fixing up our house and trying to find contractors, it became apparent to me that very few small businesses in town have a web presence. The ones that do have very old non-responsive sites, or are just using a Facebook page.

I feel there is an opportunity here for some lead gen sites. I can easily develop microsites and content for each service, but I've never really had to compete for places in the GMB local pack in my past work.

Naturally, I don't have a physical office I can use for GMB, which means I'd have to go the service area route. So my question is essentially this -

In your experience, does using a service area for GMB negatively effect your SEO, both in your site ranking and local pack position? If so, by how much?

Bonus points if you can tell me if using a service area more negatively impacts a business that should have a physical location, like say a chiropractor, over someone who is more likely to do house calls, like say a plumber.

Thanks in advance!
