Removing article from homepage - bad for my SEO?

Hey guys

My homepage has a best of article targeting a good keyword (DR 18, 20K monthly searches). Currently i'm ranking on the 2nd page (13-14).
I would like to move this article from my homepage and have it as a post, so i'll be able to redesign my homepage.

Is this recommended? How should I do that? (I guess i won't be able to use redirection, because .
then all my homepage traffic will be redirected to the new article).

    Your new internal page won't automatically rank, even page two of the SERPs. The reason it won't rank is it won't have any established followed links pointing at the new page while the Home page most likely has old established links.

    So, If you remove that article/text from the Home page I can pretty much guarantee it will drop out of the SERPs for your target keyword.

    What you need to do is a slow transition, in this order...
    1. Build a new internal webpage/URL.
    2. Create some unique and very relevant content/text on the internal page.
    3. Build followed links to the new internal page.
    4. Slowly try and outrank your Home page with your new internal page.
    5. Once the new page outranks the Home page for your keyword give it a couple of weeks to settle down on the SERPs. After the new page settles down move the old content from the Home page to the new internal page.

    Keep in mind no matter what you do, it's very risky messing with an existing ranked page. So you need to decide is it worth the risk. To be honest (IMO) it's worth the risk because you're only on the 2nd page of Google SERPs so doubtful you get much traffic right now from that keyword.
