Sub-domains are definitely considered separate websites. We advocate using folders/directories, which are better for ranking both the stuff in the directory and the main website, since links to either flow a portion of authority through to the other.

The only time you would want to use a subdomain is if you really did not want the two domain's "mojo" affecting each other. One tactic for websites that got nailed by Penguin was to put new stuff on a subdomain and that new stuff would rank while the main site was lost forever in the pit of rankings oblivion.

I remember seeing a study done by the folks at Moz. They concluded that using a sub folder is much better than a sub-domain for SEO. I don't have a link but I'm sure it would be easy to find.

Yes, studies have also been done by Rand FIshkin, Dan Thies and others. We have not published any official study but saw a marked difference when moving blogs from sub-directories to folders. It definitely makes a difference!

        Moz is full of shit.

Wikipedia is all subdomains and they rank pages for just about every niche.

WHAT MATTERS IS WHERE THE FOLLOWED LINKS ARE POINTING.

I don't think the question is whether or not a page could rank, it was whether one was better for SEO than the other. Wikipedia's subdomains are all language based, so Wikipedia is hardly "all subdomains". They don't have a separate blog that is sitting on a subdomain, which is what this post was about.

Besides, I doubt the O.P. or any member of Warrior Forum has quite the domain strength as Wikipedia (including the forum, itself). Each one of their language based subdomains, which ARE separate websites, has WAY more domain authority than anyone here is likely to ever achieve.

Doesn't matter, has nothing to do with SEO.
