Is there any benefit in writing for Ezine Articles in 2017?

Years ago, writing for Ezine Articles was the thing to do if you wanted to boost a page's position in the SERPs. But then, as you know, Google targeted article directories with a penalty. I see, however, that Ezine Articles as a company is still going strong - they still send me article performance reports for the content I submitted long ago. My question is this: what, if any, benefit is there in being an Expert Author and regular contributor to Ezine Articles now?

Thanks.

I still many marketers doing articles with Ezine and also still getting some good traffic from them. I think the key probably is quality. Good quality articles help readers to resolve a specific issue or educate reader on a good topic, that is still a good thing and it provides good values to users.

So what you're saying is that Ezine Article has a vast audience of readers and that submitting content there gets you referral traffic?

It's rare, if ever now, that I encounter an article on Ezine as a search result on Google. If a marketer is relying on Ezine for referral traffic, what type of audience would he or she reach? Would the audience consist only of other authors/marketers who use the site? Or is their a healthy general audience (of consumers)?

I would experiment by posting more articles there and seeing what type of traffic I get, but I don't want to waste time/resources or risk penalties to my site...

I'm sure there is a little bit of traffic to Ezine, but nothing to write home about. I'm also sure that there is no SEO benefit to placing links in articles there. If nothing else, you might get some affiliate commission from articles you place on EZine.

    Hi eplanellas,

Search engines do not index and rank websites, they index and rank individual web pages. So forget about trying to use a website's "authority" to rank your own web pages. Search engines like Google have never recognized the notion of "website authority", that's just an imaginary construct that a handful of web service companies dreamed up and promoted to sell services.

Google did introduce ranking factors that would prevent networks like ezinearticles from abusing the pagerank algorithm through internal link structures that promoted mostly redundant content. Those improved ranking factors, combined with a plague of content thieves that targeted Ezinearticles publishers, is what made Ezinearticles decline as the top place for publishing articles.

Ezinearticles as a website still gets an incredible amount of traffic, 2+ million visits per month. However that traffic is spread across close to a million pages. Many of the articles get virtually no views at all. Anything you publish there is likely to get scraped and republished without ever giving you credit as the source or including the requested author's link. So it might not be the idea place to publish new content.

Most content publishers have come to the realization that it is often better to publish on their own website, or to a thriving social community, rather than a place where content thieves hangout.

    HTH,

    Don Burk

      Don,

Why cite the well-known fact that search engines rank web pages not websites? Although you're correct, that bit of SEO 101 has nothing to do with the question at hand. We're discussing the value of Ezine Articles in 2017, if there's any.

I know that a lot of article directories closed up shop once they lost their SEO benefit. But Ezine Articles seems to still be going strong, and I wonder why. There doesn't appear to be any benefit whatsoever to neither publishing articles there or using the content. It's just as you say; the content gets scraped and stolen.

According to the Ezine Articles home page, the benefits are an increase in traffic and credibility, but that's doubtful to me.

I became a Platinum Level Expert Author there years ago, but my account has sat their dominant for a very long time.

I'm certain that a lot of people here on WF have more experience with Ezine than I do. I was hoping someone could explain why contributors are still active there - what's the real advantage, or are they just uninformed? Is there any reason why I should continue to add to the list of articles I have published there? For example, maybe it aids in contributing to the size of one's overall web presence? Maybe it does nothing at all...

Ezine?!?!??! Holy cow! You people have GOT to be kidding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is friggin 2017...if you people are still talking about ezine, you deserve to fail.

It is a COMPLETE waste of time...unless they still give away coffee mugs...

      LOL Paulgl!

You're right (but not about the failure part...). See, even though using Ezine became an obsolete SEO strategy long before 2017 arrived, it's still around.

Now Squidoo went belly up, we know. Why didn't Ezine follow suit? People are still publishing content there. Clearly someone is still seeing some sort of benefit in being an active contributor - what are they gaining? We already know it isn't more search engine visibility....

And coffee mugs?? A collector's item, huh? I guess I missed out...

Google did a smackdown on ezine a few years back which is why ezine has nofollow links (useless).

The site is a known spamfest that should be avoided, even If you're not doing SEO.

      Well Yukon,

You may be right that Ezine should be avoided, but nofollow links aren't useless! They are essential to having a diverse inbound link profile and should be used to balance dofollow links.

Not to mention that the referral traffic from a nofollow link on a popular web page can serve as proof of your web page's popularity. Both of these benefits can help boost your SERP position.

I think the real answer to your question is that people are still publishing to Ezine for the same reason people are still spamming blogs, spamming forums, going after massive amount of worthless directory links, social bookmarking their sites, etc.

There are a TON of clueless people out there that are still spreading the word about link building tactics that stopped working nearly half a decade ago and ten times as many gullible, desperate people who are willing to believe them. A lot of them are on this forum, too. There is a great deal of "blind leading the blind" in this industry.

        Complete nonsense.

...and this is an SEO sub-forum, not direct traffic sub-forum.

Although the quality of much of the content published on Ezine could be a lot better in my opinion, perhaps Ezine's strict standards has a lot to do with their lasting success.
